Name: Cayden and Kyle (6 and 11 months) Location: Providence, Rhode Island We started this room years ago in this theme — there’s something about the classic red, white and blue that just says little boys to me, I love it! Although it’s a small space, it carries a big punch with a mix of fun patterns to differentiate this room from the rest of our neutral home. Overall, I had really hoped to create a fun and cozy space for my two boys to share.

Erin and Tobin’s condo in Rhode Island is a perfect blend of minimal decor and bright, bold colors. She lives right in the heart of Newport, just blocks away from her small art studio and the Newport Art Museum, where she is an active member and ceramicist. She is walking distance from all the seaside city’s best restaurants and nightlife and lives in a spot where it’s easy for friends to drop by and say hello.

She says the neighborhood has changed a lot in that period of time…and this home definitely has, too!

Name: Brett Leigh Location: Providence, Rhode Island Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: Rented 6 months I drove up to an old factory in an industrial part of town, just outside of Providence, Rhode Island. This is the kind of building that’s been re-purposed and converted into loft-style apartments, so I figured I could expect some creativity. But there was nothing that could have prepared me for the magic that is Brett Leigh’s home.

Name: Karli Kane Hendrickson and pup Olive Location: West Side, Providence, Rhode Island Size: 659 square feet Years lived in: Renting 1 year Karli lives in a cozy apartment in a larger house inhabited entirely by female artists. On the first floor are two musicians in the Providence band Secret Circle, on the second floor is Muffy Brandt who runs a very successful Etsy shop.

Elizabeth fell in love with Providence and, after renting for years, bought and renovated a 1900 Victorian. She lives on the top two floors and rents out a first floor apartment.

It had been well-maintained, but was in an aging condition when Andrea and Chris bought it; they were intent on restoring it to its former glory. Over six years, they shaped it into the beautiful relic of history it is.

This 10-month rental home is a prime example,” shares Jewel Marlowe, blogger, interior stylist, and frequent customizer of rental homes.

Name: Alana and Joe Hearn Location: Newport, Rhode Island Size: 1,600 square feet Years lived in: 6 years; Owned The first thing you see when you enter the living room of Joe and Alana’s 19th century Newport home is a dynamic multimedia painting of a woman. Head thrown back, pink mouth wide open, eyes crinkled shut—you can almost hear her laughing. Her hair, made of repurposed piano keys, sticks straight out as if an electric current is running through her.

She was using them to construct a whimsical curtain for a winter white event, and they took over the counters, floors, and even her bed for two weeks.
