The Colorful & Creepy Interiors of Suspiria

Dario Argento’s 1977 cult horror classic, Suspiria, is one of our Halloween DVD musts — not for the ridiculous amount of gore or the kooky plot line — but for the over-the-top color-saturated interiors that are just so wrong they’re right.

Most of the movie takes place at a German ballet academy that is, as with many a horror film setting, not exactly what it seems. The rooms in the school are decorated and lit in an amazingly lush and surreal way that makes us kind of want to hang out there and have a few drinks … if only we didn’t have to worry about the rash of gruesome murders taking place around us. Supposedly there’s a remake in the works and we’re definitely curious to see whether the set designs will live up to the original.

Have you seen Suspiria?

I love this movie..!

Over the top, great cinematography, music, art direction, Dario Argento, and the cast alone... Jessica Harper, Joan Bennett, Udo Keir, Alida Valli.... an Italian movie about an American girl in Germany..... Love it!

I first saw this movie about five years ago when my boyfriend and I wandered into a local bar advertising a foreign horror film that night. We knew it to be a sort of cult classic and figured it would make for interesting background noise anyway. We quickly got sucked in and by about a quarter way through the film, the bar was as quiet as a theater. It was campy and cheesy, but the colors! The visuals are what I think of when I remember the movie. We have it on our Netflix queue again just to see why we keep thinking about it years later.

Ooooh, fantastic movie! And seriously, hollywood needs to crank out some more creative geniuses and quit it with the remakes already!

UNBELIEVABLE. one of my favorite movies if only just for the interiors.

minus the room filled with barbed wire. that part is pretty creepy.

Now someone needs to post some resources of where to get kooky loud wallpapers like in this movie. I watched this movie with my old roommate. I loved the sets, especially the art deco-esque wallpapers at the climax of the movie.

Great post for color month / Halloween!

Horror movie buff here; Suspiria is probably my all-time favorite. The whole thing plays out like a nightmare and once you've seen it, you'll never forget it, especially not the first murder in the opening few minutes.

And please, no remake! Not even if it's done by Dario himself!

Suspiria was the 1st part of a trilogy. To get the full impact of the storyline, see parts 2 and 3 -- Inferno and Mother of Tears. They're uneven in quality, but each one is worthwhile in its own way - although Suspiria's by far the best :-)

And no remake! We must stop them, by any means necessary!
