Top Designers Pick Favorite Shades in Every Color
House Beautiful

154582335_e342228ca0_b.jpg

We recently stumbled across this fun resource on the House Beautiful website. Designers list their favorite paint colors for the following colors: blues, browns, grays, greens, pinks, purples, and reds...

The selections range from bright and poppy to sophisticated and very unexpected. (We wish they included an orange and white section.) Next time you're looking for color inspiration and the names of tried and true paint colors check out this handy House Beautiful resource.

I imagine inside that house there's a creepy collection of dolls that look like Marie Osmond

In the right context -- San Francisco, Woodstock, funky New England college towns, certain Montreal neighborhoods -- this hippie style looks great.

I like it! (The door) It wouldn't work on my house, but on a Victorian, maybe...

"It's ugly. It looks like a big sign that says "gay", besides."

Gay people suffer enough harrasment and discrimination without being accused of tacky decoration. "We" want nothing to do with this.

Cute, but I prefer to show my dyke-tastic-ness with a little more subtlety (a rainbow flag in the BACK of the house on the porch). Though it could be a great way to give directions -- "yeah, we're down the street a little after you make that left. It's on your right, look for the house with the big gay door. Yes, the door. The big, gay door. Uh huh, yep, that's us."

I'd bet good money clueless straight folk did this to that poor door. The colours are not right for the gay rainbow flag, there is aluminum siding on the house, and just look at that janky bannister.

Judging from the banisters and siding, my guess is this home is in Funkytown, where a door such as this is perfect; Gay, hippie or otherwise.

Twitteringbirdie, you're so right about this being a great directional landmark! (I am often lost w/o them)

I can't say if this place needs a concrete unicorn or a disco ball for a lawn ornament - it's the owners call, or maybe their 10 yr old daughter's! I know my friend's kid would think this is KILLER! And she'd paint the rest of the house pink!

The semiotics of the rainbow door are easy to control.

If you want to say, "Hello, a gay person lives here", then just make sure that the paintwork is absolutely immaculate and professional, so that it's clear that it's a definite socio-political statement.

If you want to say, "Hello, a hippie lives here", then just bodge the job with uneven colour and inaccurate lines, suggesting that it was done with leftover paint by a stoned friend. Oh, and yes, a concrete unicorn in the garden wouldn't hurt.

This really is the only treatment I have seen that disguises one of those ugly *ss builders' grade front doors.

Gay or straight, I think someone found paint samples on sale and said, "what the hell?"

I would hate to live in this house, but I would love to live next to it. Better yet, across from it, so I could see it every day!

Sadly, in my neighborhood this cheerful door wouldn't last too long before it was egged, graffiti'ed, or worse.

Some of you people sound like you are old and cranky. Come on, this door is *awesome*. I couldn't get away with that (my door doesn't have side windows) but those colors are lovely and rich and fun.

House Beautiful published a small book titled Colors for Your Home, 300 Designer Favorites. I think the online section is a sampling from their book. Not sure about the orange section but there is a great section on whites as well as color fixes, colors for coziness etc. I have the book and have been using it to figure out paint selections on my new (old) house.

Obviously the person who lives in this house has a sense of humour. I think it's great. And their black iron porch light is sharp.

This door is so like the Keanu Reeves of painted doors - totally misunderstood.

The effect completely appeals to the po-foke child w/in (no Rainbow Bright or Dr Seuss for us.. we were busy gluing cut grass to rolled-out paper as opposed to coloring in the lines of expensive coloring books).

And yes, I have begun my first official (and accidental) collection. You guessed it.. tiny porcelain unicorns w/gold-tipped horns.

Pollymagoo-

If your monolithic "we" will have nothing to do with that door, can I have it? I LOVE that door so much I wish it were legal to marry it.

Hey E6,

You may have to ask the homeowner if you marry the door. I hope you have a very happy lifetime together:)
