True, most of us don't live in homes with grand hallways like this. But the photo definitely got us thinking that passageways, at least wide enough ones, provide an under-utilized book storage option.

We spotted this photo on AtticMag. It accompanied a post about rugs in a bookcase hallway. Rugs aside, the post raises a good, obvious point — hallways are a potential hot-spot for book storage, if your hallway is wide enough. Even if it's narrow you could put a high shelf (above door height) that runs the perimeter of the hallway space or just down one side of the hallway.
Have you utilized a hallway or entry way as a book storage zone?
Anyone have a source for those globe lights?

I have way too many books and a pretty small apartment, so I use this hallway space for an extra little bookshelf. I might get a taller one and just cover up the whole wall!

While lovely, it does have some functional problems.
Whatever artwork is on that right wall is going to receive pretty heavy sun, so don't put anything of great value unless both the windows and framing glass are UV protected.
Also, the reflection off of that wall potentially can damage the books as well. Especially those closest to the windows.
So, great look. Just take care when implementing.

are the books arranged the same way on every shelf?

I'm combining two standard closets (about 4' wide), the hallway side will host a pantry (though now I'm thinking a library would be more interesting after that photo), the bedroom side will host an office alcove. Trying to think of this small house like it's a boat and that every inch counts.

Rasabasa- Thanks, yeah my boyfriend is a serious cord hoarder, so I used this product from Ikea

I think it is intended to be used under a desk, but instead I just screwed it onto the inside of the closet door- so far it is working pretty well!

I do this. My upper level has a wide hallway along one side (It is a converted attic, and the ends are used for bedrooms, the middle for the stairs and the hallway) so I have put short bookcases along the length of the short walls (the sloped ceiling means the walls are short), and a pair of taller bookcases on the taller ends. I also put an easy chair and floor lamp at one end to make a reading nook right outside the master bedroom. The cats probably sit in the chair more than I do, but it's a great use of what would probably otherwise be underutilized space. It would be better if all my books fit there, but being the bibliophile that I am, that would be difficult...

For a while I've been thinking about this idea, I also love that I don't have to look at them all the time!

Love this and the benches too!

My house has a decent sized hallway in it. Not as grand as that one, but I think I may place two bookshelves in it with a bench inbetween for putting on/taking off my shoes.
