We could imagine marking the map with pins to show where we have been or combining pins and string to map out a trip. We grew up with a world map shower curtain but this takes it so much further...

Children's study or war room—what do you think?

The images above come from flickr user kbreenbo who also had this elegant use of the mural in her son's bedroom.

We first found the world map mural at Urban Outfitters but it can also be found here for much less.
Does this take you back to primary school or inspire your inner Indiana (decorator) Jones?
We had a world and US map on the wall growing up, and this just gives me a nice warm fuzzy. And I'm sure it contributed to my geography being better than the typical american.

Some of my fondest memories of growing up were when my parents told stories and showed me all the places that they traveled on our huge world map. It's one of those things that I will definitely do once I have children of my own.

As Diana Vreeland wrote: Why Donât You⦠paint a map of the world on all four walls of your boys' [children's] nursery so they wonât grow up with a provincial point of view?

I had one of these growing up too! It was great fun when the USSR fell - we drew in all the new republics.
(yeah, I'm a geography dork. did the map make me one?)

You can also print out your own typographic maps to frame on the wall.

I wanna know where the chair is from! Urban Outfitters always shows pics like this with fantastic chairs, but they don't sell the chairs. :(

One of the best and biggest map murals I've ever seen: http://stylenorth.ca/blog/2008/07/where-to-find-custom-wall-graphics/

for anyone who wants the look and educational value of a world map mural, buy a world map shower curtain (tons when I googled). We had one growing up and I would spend waaay too long on the toilet, fixated on the African capitals, Russian rivers, etc. As a result, my geography knowledge is formidable. You do not want to oppose me in trivia.
Or you could go hands-on and paint the Peace Corps World Map Project yourself . . . http://www.dpo.uab.edu/~raangus/gbrpcv/Map%20Painting%20How%20To.pdf.
I did it with schoolchildren in Central America on their school's wall and now THEY are all geography geniuses. And their school looks gorgeous.

Fantastic examples! I've been thinking of this for a while now, and your pics might push me into action now.

Ditto on sourcing the chair. Does anyone know where it's from? I saw it on the UO site months ago and even e-mailed and asked their prop stylist but he couldn't give me any information. Anyone?
