Since he was a wee lad, our pup Arlo has slinked off to behind the bathroom tub when the weather gets hotter than 80 degrees. This is a destination that he only uses when it's hot. His retreat made sense to us when there was old crackling linoleum, before we put down the controversial bathroom carpeting, but now?
Now that there's carpet, Arlo's practice makes much less sense to us. It seems that we're all creatures of habit. Deep down he's probably as disgusted by the bathroom carpet as many of you are. It's also fascinating how often we forget that this is his heat wave ritual, as we scour the apartment looking for him.
How about your creatures — do they have favorite spots in your home that the slip away to when the weather gets warm?'
Flat on the stained cement floor in fron of the fan (Arizona).

I have 3 cats. IsabellaRena retreats to the basement or inside the bathtub, GabrillaRena doesn't really go anywhere, she just moves a lot slower and TylerRena retreats to the top of the armoire, where I think would be hotter because it's higher and heat rises. But I think he likes it because it's just plain wood up there as in no fabric, rug, etc. Of course, they all just nap all day long.

My cat retreats to the bathtub. She flops on that cold tub floors and sleeps the day away.

adorable!

Matilda-Cat stations herself on my bed, directly in front of the fan. She sprawls on her back and lets the breeze ruffle her belly fur. No shame.

We ALWAYS keep the AC at 78F when we are not home so it's not hot for the dogs. And when we want to seduce them into our bed to cuddle, we turn the AC to 75 degree.

Under the couch (we have laminate floors), all the way against the back wall. Daphne adopted that as her spot on the first day we brought her home. She also likes to lay against the wall in the hallway where we have ceramic tile. Wherever she is, she's always against a wall.
Baxter doesn't care how hot it gets, he wants to be snuggled against one of us at all times.

My Clumber Spaniel sleeps on the floor of our tiled stall shower at night (we use an extra long shower curtain instead of an ugly, flimsy shower door) when it is too hot in the bedroom for him-- he will sleep on top of the A/C vents or on the granite of the fireplace hearth to keep cool elsewhere in the house. This is with the A/C going to keep the house at a reasonable temp. We wish he would sleep on the bed but he gets too hot even in the winter and jumps down after a bit. He also prefers hard wood to carpeting, and when he feels like laying his crate, he prefers not to have any type of crate pad or bed in there.

Laying IN his crate, of course . . .

When I lived in Brooklyn my French Bulldog, Gigi, would sleep under my bed at night. Now that I live in Texas, she just sleeps on the floor all the time. In this horrible heat that we're in now, she sleeps on one layer of a quilt (it used to be folded up for her, but she can't handle that) or she just sprawls out on the hardwood floor.
Oh, and on walks she either rolls around in puddles or tries to jump in the horse drinking fountain (it's for the horse carriages that tour downtown Galveston).

My cat, Calen, loves to lounge right in the middle of the wood floors or on the bathroom tile. Either or works for her.

my boston now flops down in the middle of the kitchen or living room or hides under the ikea poang footstool. he looks so pathetic but then runs around some more.
his brother the mutt doesnt seem to get overheated and has to be pushed away at night when its too hot for me to be used as his pillow.

I keep my house about 67 all year long. My cats can be found curled up under the comforter on my bed, in a cat cozy or rarely two of the five will be cuddled up together for warmth. I'd bet my cats would be happier if it was warmer or lived in the south.

We live in the south. It's hot. I mean REALLY hot. I came home to find this one day:

(we're renovating that bathroom, so eventually she won't be able to do this, but until then, it's hilarious)

One day I came home to find Nibbler taking advantage of our bathroom renovation to snag what was possibly the coolest spot in the house:

My cat plops his little kitty butt directly in front of the air conditioner and sniffs the air. When he's bored of that, he hangs out on the tile in the bathroom.

stupid question time... are we not allowed to post links to pictures of our pets sleeping in their cool-off spot? I didn't see that in the rules, so I can't figure out if my comment keeps getting deleted, or if I'm doing something wrong in the posting.
thanks.

lorigami, your picture is hilarious. FYI - comments take quite awhile to post. I'm not sure why, perhaps they are reviewed and inappropriate content censored? It is pretty annoying if you ask me.

Lorigami, what you are seeing is correct, no way to embed images, just give the link is all.

all 3 of my cats move at in slow motion. my first summer in my apartment, i was scared that i had poisoned them or something because of the lack of movement. All 3 lie with their bellies up near the screen door or a fan. it's silly to see and is great for ambush belly rubs.

I have a goofy patch of tile, just two porcelein tiles deep in front of the fireplace. 70 lb dog lays right there. Takes up the whole thing. Guess it's cooler than the wood floor.

My ginger tabby Riley has taken to hanging out in his cat carrier - pretty funny since he loathes it most of the time. He'll lay on his side and stretch out one paw as if to catch any tiny breeze that might come by. The ridiculous thing is that I run the air conditioner in my bedroom and leave the door cracked so that he can get some genuine relief.

My dog goes onto the wood floors, avoiding his blankets and beds. Only... these super-tiny ants have invaded my house (maybe due to the rain?), and Buddy cannot STAND them. He will come running into the next room, tail between his legs, looking completely disgruntled and ashamed. At first I thought he had neurological problems, and then I looked closely and realized he's just scared of the ants. He can actually smell them, and won't lie down until he has "cleared" whatever patch of floor he wants to lie on.
Bathroom carpeting?! No. Way.

My cat crawls under blankets. But then again, he's a hairless cat, so that's probably to be expected. Seems to love being under his blanket when it's in the 80s in the house (even better if he's on my lap too). Weirdo.

Toilet Cat!
My cat doesn't really change his lounging-around habits. If it's very hot, he avoids beds (his and mine) and is more inclined to sprawl on the tile floor in the dim hallway. But he'll still nap on the couch, the upholstered rocking chair, the blanket I keep on an extra chair in my room...

since my cat and one of my dogs don't get along he is usually under the bay window on the conrete.
my other two dogs who get along with the cat usually sleep directly under the ceiling fan. cat sleeps next to the air vent on top of the cabinets.

Our cat lays right on top of the ac vents. he also likes to stick his paw down there, i guess to play with the dust.

My cat is weird, she prefers to sleep on hard surfaces during any weather. Lately it's been my glass-top coffee table. She weighs 6lbs so I don't bother to shoo her off. And she adores the doorway from my bedroom to the master bath. I have no idea why that spot is so magical for her but she will yowl at the bathroom door if I dare to go to bed with the door shut.
view Minyuette's profile
Our cat, Snowball, loves to sprawl out on the tile floor just about anywhere in the house to cool off. As she gets older, though, it's less the heat and more the barometric pressure when storms approach which bother her. She moves in slow motion, as low to the ground as possible, and then sinks down onto the rug in the narrow kitchen. It's very strange, but at least we know when a storm is coming.

My Corgi lies on the lino kitchen floor, in front of the air cooler which we direct at him because he does not like the heat and is prone to throwing up as a side effect. We lay down wet towels and feed him ice as well as cooling him down with a drench in the bath. Poor pup hates summer.

I always have the A/C going when it's hot, so my dog doesn't need to cool down. She has a short muzzle and as a consequence, any heat at all makes her breathing wheezy, so I have to keep her cool.
