apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Wes, Kayla & Bacon's Brookline Remix
House Tour

WK_LivingRoom2.jpg

Name: Wes, Kayla & Bacon
Location: Brookline, Massachusetts
Size: 990 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 Years

Begin with an architect and a graphic designer — engaged but living separately. Move them into a big apartment in need of a holistic overhaul, merge all their earthly possessions, and make them freelancers for Apartment Therapy. Toss in a Bacon and a wedding. Sprinkle with do-overs. Simmer for about a year and you’ll end up in our home.

WK_Thumbnails.jpg

We dove into cohabitation with an aggressive game plan, a literal floor plan, and an acknowledgement that with a new puppy and a wedding in the works, we were probably in over our heads. But we didn't let that or the dark wood paneling stop us. Patience is the best tool we can recommend when it comes to creating a home with another person. It's not going to be perfect and it's not going to be quick. But like breaking in a great pair of jeans, the fit will eventually be effortless and so comfortable you never want to leave.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our style: Modern & eclectic

Inspiration: The homes of friends and family that have been lived in for many years and feel effortless yet refined and personal.

Favorite Element: The combination of Mid-Century, contemporary modern, and custom made pieces that are finally starting to feel a little more timeless.

Biggest Challenge: Wes leans more toward severe, stark modern spaces while Kayla favors high contrast, graphic spaces. Merging our individual design tendencies and creating a warm, textured home we can both relax in and enjoy.

What Friends Say: Hello Bacon!

Biggest Embarrassment: Peeling paint in the foyer, which only began after we re-painted the foyer the second time; the pink bathroom sink and tub; never ending trail of stuffed animal "brains" that Bacon leaves everywhere (see top image); and the one fallen pot on the purple wall (it's getting fixed soon).

Proudest DIY: Sanding, priming and painting all the dingy, old wood paneling and doors to make the front and back of the apartment more cohesive, and putting new drywall in the hallway.

Biggest Indulgence: Blu Dot Bonnie and Clyde sofas, our first joint furniture purchase right before we moved in; a spontaneously purchased card catalog; 6 new Eiffel bases for our vintage Eames shells in the dining room, which family members purchased as wedding presents (Thank You).

Best advice: Take your time and do it right, rushing isn't worth it a year later. Buy things you love to develop your own style and when you see something you like try to understand why you like it so you know what to look for in future pieces.

Dream source: (Wes) Moss, a barn full of old shaker antiques, and a sale of modern art at Christie's; (Kayla) a letterpress studio clearance

Your home is beautiful-- I am always searching for a way to integrate color that doesn't distract from a modern aesthetic, and doesn't look too harsh (or, conversely, too prissy or old-fashioned). Good work!

Aside from your brilliant design choices, I have to say that your ADORABLE dog is quite possibly my favorite accessory.

Kayla here -

A preemptive comment on the TV in front of the fireplace: it is a non-functioning fireplace and all outlets and cables really left us no choice but to position the TV there. It actually works beautifully and we wouldn't change it at all.

I think that I would have loved this tour -- unfortunately I had a hard time seeing any of the photos with the pop up ads blocking every picture if I lingered for more than half a second. Is there any way to get rid of them? They're horrible!

Love the house tour - love the color of all of the walls, from the gray to the turquoise. Did NOT love the pop-up ads that kept blocking every photo and then turning to video. SO FREAKIN' ANNOYING. Yelling at AT, not you Wes and Kayla. Love love your home. And most of your posts, too, actually. --Tara

Hey there,

I was wondering what color you painted the living room? What brand of paint, and what color name? I painted our living room a light grey a few days ago, but i think I want it just a shade darker. I really like yours.

Thanks!

Lovely bones, lovely apartment!
The sliding closet doors look great.
Your apartment looks so comfortable but poor Bacon looks as if he was disturbed during a nap in a few pics.
Is your couch nicely firm, it looks similar to Gregory's and I am looking for a firm one?
Where is your kitchen island from, it doesnt look Ikea?
Great job, thanks for sharing.
Also noted no ugly cords under your computer, like mine.

But I just can't drop the issue of the beautiful fireplace, which I feel merits more reverence.
There are tons of cool ways to work with a non-functioning fireplace already posted on AT...we've seen books, plants, candles.

I love that you have so much nicely framed art, and also love your comforter cover, the kitchen pegboard, the card catalog, and the great ceramic display in the living room.

I'm sad that the TV is in front of the fireplace. Even though it's non-working, its (unobscured) architectural heft would have added to the room, IMO.

People who were plagued by pop-ups should look to their computers -- I saw none so I don't think the problem is with AT.

And people wanting paint colors, sources, etc. should consult the very thorough list that the homeowners provided, above.

Thanks for the tour, though I did experience some deja vu.

When I see this tour, I think I about how much time it would take me to make my home look this neat and organized. LOVE the bedroom "closet" and your style (goes well together obviously!). I was looking forward to your tour, and it didn't disappoint (though morbid curiosity begs for a pic of the pink bathroom) and I am in the no covered fireplace camp...but it doesn't really detract at all from the fact that your apartment is great. Thanks for sharing!

Great job, great ideas! I am in the process of painting my home of 1 year, so it's fun to see someone who did it already. I love the Place des Vosges poster in the foyer!...I have a small watercolor of it that I need to reframe and put up once the painting is done. I'll be referring back to this for ideas as I get around to the arranging and styling. I'm not as modern in taste, but some things transcend. Grew up with Engl. bulldogs, so Bacon, albeit a Frenchie, is adorable! :)

Generally, I am not bothered by pop-up ads, so I don't think it was my computer at fault. I was one of the first to post and complained of them, and then a number of others complained as well. I think they were modified in response to the negative feedback.

Lovely space!

I'll speak up in defense of the "fireplace violation." Work with them or around them, as your tastes and needs dictate, but there is nothing sacred about fake fireplace mantles. My condo had (past tense) two of them, in the LR and DR, hogging the only real length of wall space in both rooms. When I bought the place I thought they were pretty, but after a while it was clear that they dictated the layout of the rooms in ways I didn't like. When I finally did some major renovation work elsewhere, I had them both ripped out. My mother practically cried but I don't miss them a bit, it opened up both rooms in a big way. I donated them to the Boston Building Materials Resource Center, so maybe they'll have another life elsewhere.

Your bedroom closet is like the answer to a prayer! Where did you get the sliding panel things? Or did you get the hardware and make them? If you did a post about this i didn't see it, sorry. I really need that- can't stand curtainy curtains.

Very clever to use those IKEA curtain panels to make part of the bedroom a closet. Even worth sacrificing that window, since there is another one anyway and it makes for a bright closet! Agree the TV could go in the corner instead, maybe wall-mounted on a swing-out arm?
