Derek took a smart approach to his kitchen renovation, sourcing items from industrial supply companies to create a durable space for cooking. Working with an architect, he developed an open, airy layout that's functional and family friendly.
Abt Electronics and Appliances
The stove is a DCS range that Derek describes as "Good. Serviceable. Easy to Clean. Heavy duty parts," although he says the oven "is a little small." You can find DCS ranges starting around $3,000 at major appliance stores, like ABT (an online catalog based in the Chicago area).
Derek's refrigerator is Amana, purchased "during period when they made the inner workings for Viking, so it looks like a mini Viking inside." Although this particular model is no longer available, you can find Amana refrigerators (ranging between $500 and $1,500) at stores like Home Depot and ABT.
Derek says his dishwasher "breaks all the time" and he would have preferred a Miele. You can find Miele dishwashers and appliances (starting around $1,200) at lots of major retaliers, including Amazon.com.
Fireslate is a heat-resistant surface that looks a lot like the lab countertops found in a chemistry classroom. Made of Portland cement, silica, and other fillers, it's a substance that's much more lightweight than natural stone and has a dark, solid color.
Derek worked with his architect, sourcing industrial materials to develop the kitchen island. If you're looking for off-the-shelf industrial kitchen supplies, Advance Tabco sells heavy-duty kitchen sinks, dishboards, and shelving. Prices are on par with other commercial-grade stores, which means not low but not astronomical either.
Cabinets and Shelves
BMC Lab Supply
Derek found the white cabinets at BMC, a lab supply company based out of New Jersey. He says, "They wear like steel should, look snappy and never break. Only drawback is that they are rigid, so modifications for future changes are not so easily accomplished."
Cookware & More
Stainless steel All Clad is a favorite chef's brand since it heats evenly and it's very durable. All Clad is expensive, but Cookware & more (an online and in-person store based in Trooper, PA) carries a large selection of irregular and deeply discounted All Clad, and they also have frequent sales with good deals.
Derek loves quality kitchen tools and says, "I have a Rosle Spatula that has changed my formerly bitter relationship with crepes, overeasy eggs and omelettes. Good tools do matter. I also love my Le Creuset crepe pan and Deep Braising Pot." The Le Creuset Crepe Pan (shown left) is $100 through Amazon.
Derek worked with Brooklyn-based MESH Architecture, owned by Eric Liftin. The firm has a portfolio of residential and renovation projects in the New York area.
