Mid-winter in Chicago is usually pretty gray, and it's around this time of year that we look for ways to cheer up our home and introduce more color. One simple DIY project with a big impact involves painting the insides of your bookshelves or cabinets.
It's not exactly a new idea, but it's one that's worth revisiting. Lining the interior of the shelves with color is a little less expected than painting the whole piece of furniture, and it creates some contrast as well as a bright backdrop for books. For tips on painting furniture, see this post.

Nomade Express Slee...
I SO love this idea - would love to recreate in my home eventually :)
I love this look, it gives a real richness and depth and everything on your shelf looks better than it did before. I did it in a place I lived in years ago, I'd forgotten all about it until I saw this.
This is such a great look! I recently saw pics of a kitchen that had lime green cabinet interiors, and it made me happy. Definitely something to consider in the future.
Very pretty, but it only works in shelves that are sparsely packed and/or very tall. My bookshelves are only 10 inches deep, which just leaves about an inch of space between the top of a hardback and the next shelf.
I tried doing this with colored paper, but found that it wasn't worth the effort since so little shelf showed.
I've done this in the past. I had some vivid white bookcases. I painted the interior bright red. I received many, many compliments! This is a great way to add visual interest to otherwise sterile white shelves!
i so so love when ppl just take IKEA a step further!!!
This makes book shelves look amazing! I just wish any of my bookshelves were so well merchandised. :)
I couldn't help but notice that every example was of a white bookshelf. I wonder how it would look on bookshelves of other colors...
this is nice with white because of the contrast and also because white furniture always starts looking dingy after a while
Thank you for this simple but great idea. I'm about to move in with my bf and he has a lot of ikea furniture (I am not a fan) including the ubiquitous Billy bookcase. A little customization can go a long way! This sounds like a great way for me to remain sane, and him to be happy I "let" him keep that particular piece of furniture.
i painted canvas "paper" and stuck them in the back of a corner cabinet of a rent house. the cabinet was dark wood but the pop of color really made a difference. i used a purply bluish.
Would anyone have a suggestion for a similar source? Construction-wise, I'd love to go one step less-likely-to-fall-over than the Billy.
Does anyone know where i can get the "Book" and "End" bookends?
@MilesSmiles: The waste basket is called the Bin Bin and its by Essey. You can get it here: http://www.greenergrassdesign.com/amei-es-bn-essey.html
Ikea's Billy bookcases in white bug me so much because they aren't (or at least all four of mine aren't) a true white, they're off, like a lot of their white furniture is. But I love this image above so what I'm thinking of doing is painting the exterior frame of the bookcases to bright white, and so we don't have sticking issues, and use colored or patterned contact paper for the interior walls. It should have about the same result!
I did this recently with an espresso color-painted bookshelf. The inside of each shelf was a bright red. I was a great way to bring color together in the living room without having to add more accessories (and avoid the clutter).
Does anyone know where the lime green / white cabinets came from? I have been looking and looking for something like that (I understand it didn't necessarily come with lime yellow backing!) but a small, short bookcase that can hold my 12" plates (and maybe has doors, but not necessary) would be SO GREAT!

It is a clever idea to have color inside your furniture. I had ordered wallpaper that would match wood color (print with dots of red in it) and bought two way tape to put up wallpaper inside cupboards. When landlord saw what I was doing she offered to evict me, so that was the end of my idea. It would not have hurt the wood cabinets inside at all. Maybe Florida will be more understanding to me. I love the little dog light also on floor. Wish I had one like it. I am happy for the resident in this picture. sincerely, Mary.
