Brilliant & Beautiful: 5 New Ways to Hang Coat Hooks

Coat hooks. I mean… there’s not really much you can do there, right? (Wrong.) With one or two or 20 standard coat hooks and a little bit of ingenuity, you can create some pretty stellar little hallway hacks worthy of bearing an artsy label like “entryway installment” (rather than dull old coat rack).

Above, a Paris apartment designed by Kalb Lempereur takes a simple dowel-style coat hook and multiplies it, creating not only a visual feast but also a sort of peg-board rig that can be used to hold up a small shelf, too.

This product shot from IKEA uses a similar idea, using simple BJÄRNUM hooks mounted in an orderly grid to give this expanse of wall some pattern in addition to function. The rods and shelves mounted below stick to the same measurements for a totally unified look.

This is the Teddy Hook, a beautiful piece from Alice Tacheny that you can buy right now in her shop. I happen to think it’s also a bit of inspiration for a DIY project: When you screw your dowel hooks into the wall, do it through a little loop of leather–it’s the perfect place to hang a scarf or sunglasses.

You could attach a decorative detail to the front of your hooks, too. Inspired by this apartment from Interior Junkie, pick up some wood rounds from a craft store and paint them before gluing them to the outer part of your hooks.

Finally, a simple but pretty spectacular solution from a Planete Deco apartment: Drill holes into a shelf or shadow box and hang an array of metallic S-hooks in each one for your coats and accessories.
