In many parts of the country it's getting close to the time of year when you start eyeing your outdoor furniture and deciding what you're going to cover or store for the winter and what has, frankly, had it. If you have a ratty old picnic table that you're considering letting go, take a cue from Krista who gave hers a new look and a new life.

This particular picnic table used to live in a public campground so it had seen a lot of use and better days. As Krista describes, "the paint was beige and chipped, there were signatures and drawings all over the top. The side pieces were bare plywood. It could only get better!"

After sanding and filling holes with spackle, Krista painted the table and benches black and then added a top layer of homemade chalkboard paint. As a final touch she painted some stones and put out some chalk for her kids to use (tic tac toe is popular she reports!). We love this project not only because Krista was able to completely freshen up an old piece of furniture, but the black paint makes this piece so sleek and modern looking that we'd consider the same treatment on a brand new picnic table.

Get tips on how to do this yourself on Krista's blog, Thinking With My Heart.
