Product: Brookstone's Tranquil Moments Bedside Sleep Sound Machine
Rating: Strong Recommend*
Sleep machines have been around forever without much change or evolution. For years, I swore by sleep machines, especially when traveling. However, it wasn't always easy to find ones that were truly portable enough for travel, so I'd have to rely on the hotel to have a CD player to play my favorite disc or use my earbuds and a playlist on my phone, which are terrible for sleeping. What I've been searching for for years finally exists in Brookstone's Tranquil Moments Sleep Machine. Portability. Built in battery. And a Bluetooth speaker as a bonus.
If you haven't traveled with a sleep machine before, I truly recommend it. It's my secret weapon against jet leg and helps to ease the stress of sleeping in new places. Brookstone's small machine manages to host 12 sounds with 3 timing options. There are some tracks which I haven't come across before, specifically Brown Noise, which I can't imagine anyone really liking. It sounds a lot more like a TV channel searching for a connection than a consistent and calming sound.
The real bonus is the Bluetooth connectivity, so you can add more sounds and you can use it for entertainment on the go. It combines two commonly purchased items into what one stand alone speaker or sleep machine usually costs.
This isn't to say that it's not a great at-home solution, though. It's small size and true portability are great for families who have sleep issues. Everyone can take turns using it and the buttons are so big and easy to use that any child could learn how to operate it.
Another unexpected bonus? The sounds on the device actually remind me of common yoga and meditation tracks. Specifically, Focus is a great track option for people who want to create an ambiance while doing yoga at home. And Unwind is perfect for meditative practices. The timing feature is also perfect for these activities, because it allows you to create 30, 60 or 90 minute timed sessions.
Battery life was also better than expected. We ran it 8 hours continuously before have to recharge. With your average person using it for about an hour every night, that works out to a once a week charging schedule.
Pros: Perfect for travel due to its size and long battery life. It combines a bluetooth speaker too, which is a bonus. Easy to use, even for children.
Cons: Some of the sounds are truly not great, specifically Brown Noise and White Rain, which just seems like a duplication of Rain. A little on the spendy side, but still reasonable.
