[In light of the temporary unavailability of Ikea's popular, affordable cribs, we're re-running this post from 1/24/11 and updating the crib information.]
Buying a crib is often the biggest, and very often the first, purchase parents make for a nursery. There are literally hundreds of choices; enough to make your head spin. Most of our readers are looking for two things in a crib: modern and affordable. We've written about cribs that fall into these categories before, but I wanted to make it easy by putting them in one place. I'll start with a confession: I did not buy a budget crib.
I've written about the crib I did buy before and my 2.5-year-old is still happily sleeping in it (and, miraculously, has not tried climbing out...yet). This crib was by far the most expensive purchase we made and one we still feel great about. We chose it primarily for its size and functionality (I roll it out of the office every day for my son's nap), but if my son had his own room I would have most certainly been on the hunt for a much more affordable crib.
There are different schools of thought in crib shopping. Some parents want quality - solid wood and construction - and are willing to pay for it. And there are plenty of super beautiful choices for modern cribs these days, most costing between $700- 1200 (and up!). The other perspective is focused on longevity. Even if you try to purchase investment pieces in the rest of your home, the lifespan of a crib is relatively short. You may use it for several children, pass it on to a friend or resell it, but eventually all your children will graduate to a bed. Cribs are large to store for future generations and, as we know, safety standards change over time.
Here is a roundup of cribs I consider budget and modern (some more than others):
"What do you consider modern?"
To be slightly more specific than Justice Potter's famous line about porn, "I know it when I see it," - straight, clean lines, minimal details, unfussy.
"What do you consider budget?"
It seems every time we use the word "budget" on Ohdeedoh a discussion ensues in the comments, usually decrying something "not budget." Everyone's conception of budget will be different, but I've chosen $500 as the cutoff in this roundup as this number falls near the middle on the crib price spectrum (discounting some of the reeeeally expensive ones).

Stork Craft
[Update: This crib is listed as out of stock or backordered on several sites including the link below to Toys R Us. We did find it listed as in stock at Sears for $150 and you may be able to find it in stock elsewhere online or in stores.]
• Libby (the closest thing to the Gulliver if you don't live near Ikea) - $130 (sold by various retailers in this general price range).
DwellStudio for Target
[Update: We haven't received official confirmation, but this crib seems to have been discontinued.]

• City Lights Commuter - about $365
Giggle
[Update: still available at this price]
• Harper - $500 (natural or $550 walnut)
NEW ADDITION (as of 7/28):
• Argington
Although the birch version of this crib is still listed at $685, the Sahara crib in white, ebony and white/ebony just squeaks in under our $500 limit. You can find it several places online (shipping in early-mid August) for $495 including here and here.
Closing Thoughts:
Read reviews!
With the exception of Ikea, many of these cribs are only sold online and you'll have a hard time finding them in stores to inspect the quality. Do your research and read the reviews other parent-customers have left after they've received and started using these cribs.
Secondhand
Craigslist or local parenting listservs are valuable resources for finding used modern cribs that you might not otherwise be able to afford. Keep in mind that safety standards change (like the recent ban of manufacturing drop side cribs).
Any crib can work with your modern style
You know best what your budget and priorities are. If you end up with a crib that doesn't perfectly suit your style, make it work. A less-modern looking crib can work really well in an otherwise modern space. Remember these terrific rooms which all have the classic Jenny Lind crib (around $200, pictured below)? Let them inspire you.

Sprout Side Table
We have the ikea gulliver $99 special and our 4.5 year old is still sleeping in it (with the side taken off of course) and I've never had a single complaint. Of course we put a much more expensive natural mattress in it... so it wasn't exactly a "cheap" experience all around. But we do love the bed frame.
I'm surprised that this article didn't include the Ikea Sniglar crib which has a great modern aesthetic and all natural wood with no finishes (either toxic or non-toxic!)... we just purchased and are really pleased with how it fits in to our soon to be born twins room (I will post photos at some point!!) - the funny thing which I think most people on ohdeedoh haven't caught on to is that 'dwellstudio' actually use the sniglar in their advertising online: look at the second display photo of most of their baby bedding lines and you will find the Ikea sniglar crib used to display their bedding (this was done prior to bringing out their own cribs):
http://www.dwellstudio.com/designer-baby-boutique/nursery-bedding/garden-blossom-crib-set.html
Goes to show that you can mix low and high end just like dwellstudio does and have a great looking nursery! It's all about how you style it imo...
PS We used the $$$ saved on a high end organic mattress and quality sheeting and bedding products
You just compared cribs to porn.
just saying
Days before my daughter was born last winter, a bajillion (I think that was the number) drop-side cribs not unlike the hand-me-down one I had were recalled.
In a panic, I ordered this stationary side number http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3725221&CAWELAID=404829443 which arrived about a week after she was born.
Nice clean lines. Nice construction. Nice bottom line.
(We also have the Baby Mod ParkLane for my son which has since been converted to a toddler bed - we've been happy with this piece as well)
We have the Olivia crib and dresser, and have been thrilled with them.
I'd pay WAY more for a crib if I could actually get my son to sleep in it!!
@hanna - you said it!
I can't say enough good things about the Gulliver. It's simple, safe and you can't beat the price.
I haven't seen this crib mentioned, but imo it should be considered: http://www.amazon.com/Simns-Furniture-Urban-Convertible-Espresso/dp/B002MZRSME/ref=sr_1_8?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1295900761&sr=1-8
Its what we went with, and actually got sub $300.00 from Target.
Also in the line:

I got the best deal on a crib EVER! Cute white crib (in great shape with no recalls) off freecycle. Then I actually won an organic mattress from a blog! Now that the 2nd is on the way..and I'm not willing to switch out my 1st.. I'm back on the hunt. I don't think I'm going to be so lucky this time...
we love the #babymod and #babyletto crib collections.
We have the Dwell Studio Silver Lake cribs and dresser for our twins and we love it!
It's well made and solid, very pleased with the construction.
I was always so disappointed that modern cribs were so expensive, so when I saw this one, I had to have it.
love my sniglar! they were out of the gulliver when I drove 2 and a half hours to the nearest ikea and I couldn't leave without a crib so I got the sniglar.
I agree with kellyw. what I like about it is that it is so clean and simple. the bedding and rest of the room accessories become the focus and not the crib itself.
We have the Mod Parklane from Walmart and really love it. The storage drawer has been a life saver for our small house. The look is great and the price is even better!
Wait, what is the first crib? (the grayish-blue one)
That's a new crib from Wal-Mart's baby mod line. I think its $300.

Thar she be! They have it in navy and white, too. I was wrong about the price.
Thanks @radiorriot! :D
We bought the Dwell Studio Silver Lake Crib in Dark Brown last year and still love it!
two draw backs though:
the finish comes off easily when chewed on and its hard to find railing covers that fit. luckily my little one is (hopefully) past that stage.
and the drawers on the bottom collect dust easily b/c they are basically open, also once the crib is lowered the crib skirt covers the drawers completely, and with the skirt you can see right into the drawers.
we then bought the matching dresser and im a little disappointed in the wasted space in the drawers, they look like they are all different sizes, but only the fronts are, the actual drawers are all shallow.
Surprised it wasn't mentioned, but we purchased the Leksvik crib from IKEA. It converts to a toddler bed and was only $129.
We are trying to buy our first crib and it has been an experience. I decided that I want something something made in North America or Europe. I'm torn between getting one of the ikea cribs or a more expensive El Greco crib (maybe the Jenny Lind clone on Land of Nod).
I keep reading online that there is a gap in some of the ikea cribs? I'm going to check them out this weekend and see...
And then there's that whole bassinet thing!!
I think the gap with the ikea crib only happens with a standard size crib mattress. Like most Ikea things, the cribs work best with their brand of mattresses. I haven't noticed any gap that way.
What about the Pali Milano crib? Online it looks like it's retailing for right around $500, but I know (from experience) you can get it in store for $430. I love this crib!!
http://www.pali-design.com/index.php?path=products&template=products_view§ion=products&subsection=by_category&page=products&product_id=228
i like the look of these, but do they contain particle board (which is glued together with formaldehyde)? i'm not excited about the off-gassing?
also, if you need to use an ikea mattress, do they have organic solutions?
would someone please share if they have purchased an organic mattress to go with the ikea leksvik or gulliver crib. I'm searching for an organic mattress that will fit.
We've been using the Ikea Gulliver for over a year with an organic latex/wool and cotton cover mattress (standard size) from organicgrace.com - excellent customer service, the mattress is lovely and we plan to use it as long as we can. There is no gap - it's very tight around the crib. Good luck!
We have an Ikea Sniglar crib with an organic mattress from Naturepedic. Fits perfectly.
We love our Gulliver and have had two. The newer version converts to a toddler bed. Nice simple lines. Low to the ground. Small footprint. We pair them non-toxic natural matresses from Organic Grace (give them a call, they know everything).
We bought a used Stokke Sleepi from someone on the AT classifieds for $400, including a Stokke mattress. I also see similar Stokke Sleepi postings on craigslist all the time, and its a great way for money-minded parents to be able to own such a great crib at a fraction of the price.
I have an ikea sniglar which I used a non-ikea crib mattress for and didn't have any problems.
and I will point out, if anyone is worried about how the ikea cribs wear, that my daughter is over 2 years old and big for her age (36 inches and 35 pounds) and she loves to jump in her crib and run back and forth from one end to the other and the crib looks just as good and is just as solid as the day I put it together.
I love our ikea crib and hope they bring them back soon!
LOVE my babymod Park Lane! 19 months of use and still looks like new. Well, sort of like new since we painted the drawer at the bottom to coordinate with the room.
@Christine1ca - We have the IKEA Gulliver and it contains NO particle board, it's 100% birch (I think?) Got it after I read it had an 'A' rating (one of the very few out of almost a hundred cribs reviewed) in the Baby Bargains book.
Absolutely love it everything about it :)
I'm always so surprised that this site doesn't seem to talk about convertable cribs! We have one, and we did spend much more than I wanted too, but it was so worth it! It starts as a crib for when they're babies (not so much for us since we co-sleep), then into a toddler bed, then into a bed frame for a double bed. Yes i paid more initially, but I'm going to get so many more years out of it. :)
The oeuf robin crib is only $590. I love ours. Beautiful, high quality and affordable.
Convertable cribs unfortunately aren't an option for lots of people. I know im not the only one with a small 50's nursery, and a full size bed takes up the entire room. Our kid will be stuck with a twin until adulthood!
Does anyone know which, if any, of these cribs are good for short parents? I'm about five feet, and when we visited BRU, I had a hard time reaching down to the mattress levels on most cribs, even though they were at the highest settings (and I guess the lower we'll have to set them, the heavier the baby will be, which just makes things harder!). Any advice would be much appreciated!
We are in our 4th year of the walmart parklane (it got a three week break between baby 1 and baby 2). We love it and other than some teething marks it looks brand new. It's been taken apart and put back together for moves a few times, a few months of the toddler rail (perfect transition!) I rarely sing the praises of walmart, but this one is great.
Has anyone bought the Modena? Im really leaning towards it (they have a great price on a dresser, mattress + crib combo) but there aren't many reviews and I hate to spend $500 on something i've never seen.
