Adding a computer to a home theater setup is a great idea. While we love having a hard drive full of music connected to our entertainment system and easily streaming content from Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube, we are not so in love with the look of a computer sitting near our TV. Instead of having a tower sitting on or near an entertainment console, this clever Lifehacker reader built a PC inside his Ikea Besta console. Now that is some slick DIY action! This neat Ikea Hack from Lifehacker reader aec007 hides a well-ventilated HTPC in an Ikea Besta media console making for one very sleek solution to where to put the home theater PC tower.
One of the biggest challenges in integrating the HTPC in the console was finding a way to deal with dust since the unit was going to be close to the floor. Aec007's solution for dust was to use a 12" x 20" x 1" filter from Home Depot. The filter helps lower static pressure increasing the overall longevity of the fan, and lowering their rate of replacement. Making sure the computer is properly ventilated is also key to cutting down on dust.
We love Ikea hacks and this one by aec007 is no exception. We think this hack looks great and is a superb way to get more use out of a Besta console.
