One thing you'll never hear when discussing bedroom design is 'It's nice, but it has too much storage. Do you think we could lose the closet?' Keeping a child's bedroom neat and organized is a daunting task in the best of circumstances. When there is a lack of adequate storage then that task becomes almost hopeless. Here is a great project that utilizes the precious space under the bed for something besides breeding dust bunnies.

The Family Handyman has free online plans for a sturdy under the bed storage box that will help keep down the clutter. It is a fairly straightforward project, with the most difficult part being cutting the plywood, which can be a bit tricky for the uninitiated. The box rolls out easily on four casters and can be customized to fit your area. Be sure to use paint-grade interior plywood if you plan to paint it. All in all, a nice project that older children can take part in. Getting them to use the boxes is up to you.
