They're useful and very pretty built-ins. I haven't had something like them built in my home because I prefer being able to rearrange and change out things easily. If I were to do so, then they'd have shelves that could be adjusted.
The first photo is gorgeous. Every time I see something about a "home library" or "built in bookshelves" on AT, I save photos for my future Growlery.
I absolutely covet these. I am dying the pull apart the wall in my living room and put up some built-in bookshelves on either side of my fireplace. Someday...
I just had built-in bookshelves made for our loft and I love them so much. They can be hard to plan at first, and I was nervous they wouldn't look right after they were installed, but they are actually better than I envisioned. We worked with Christian Galesi in Brooklyn, and I couldn't recommend him more. Totally worth the investment!
