Before coming across these examples, I tended to think of bookcases as rather inflexible boxes, but I quickly learned that floating or simple plank shelving with brackets can be made to fit almost any space: between slanted ceilings, under stairs, next to fireplace, around windows and door frames— the sky's the limit! While some versions will probably require the expertise of a carpenter (pictures 4, 5, 7), the others are simple enough to recreate with the help of a handsaw, miter, stud finder and basic brackets.

I'm thinking you can add number 3 to the list of ones that needed a carpenter.
I agree, bookshelves used to be a square box, that you tucked to the side of a room to stuff your box. Now that architectural elements have molded bookshelves, it's wonderful addition to your decor. I especially love when people utilize the space over doorways... How great is this?!
Does anybody know how I can find the blue paint color used in the second-to-last picture? That is the exact color I have tried to get twice now, and both times I failed!
I really like the shelves on the staircase. That looks really nice.
