In the last few weeks we’ve witnessed neighbors trying to dispose of large items such as mattresses and refrigerators by simply dumping them outside in the hopes it will magically disappear. Guess what? They’re still out there. It seems this practice is not all too uncommon, nor is it rare for us residents to just wait around for someone else to take care of it.
Nosing around online this morning, I discovered that the County of Los Angeles offers a special bulky item service, where they’ll come out and pick up your nasty, ratty-ass mattress that you’ve left outside to rot from the inside out on the curb for all to enjoy for absolutely free. Since it’s unlikely the perpetrators will do it themselves, we’re going to call 310.677.6500 and arrange for a pickup. Give them 24 hours and they come and pick up furniture, stoves, washers, water heaters, bundled piping or wood. No information about pick-up and disposal of inconsiderate neighbors.

unless you're in the city of la, then they don't service you and you need to call: 1800 773 2489 so that, on your regular trash day, they can send out another guy to pick up the bulky items if you put them near your trash bins. you have to call so the guy knows to zip by your place.
Actually this number is for commercial accounts. The correct tel. # for individuals is 1-800-773-2489 - City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Sanitation, Bulky item collection.

You have to be a customer of the city garbage pick-up already to use the 310.677.6500 number. My apartment building uses a private waste management company, so they couldn't help me when I called since we're not an existing customer.
The 1-800-773-2489 number worked like a charm though--it took two seconds and was free. GREAT, great tip!!
