It wasn't long ago that we brought you into the colorful and delightful Jamaica Plain home of Ila and Nate. We thought their place couldn't get any cooler but they did it — with the help of the uber talented Chroma Lab.
The playful bathroom paint job is SO much more than a paint job. It involves burlap wall covering, plaster, primer, paint, glaze, strie brush, stencil, steel wool, creativity, artistry, and…a cute kitty.
The duo at Chroma Lab (a Jamaica Plain-based design business that creates colorful painted furniture, clocks, and wall treatments) have generously detailed the process for Ila and Nate's bathroom, so that you can turn it into your own DIY project. For the step by step photos and instructions, check out this post on the Chroma Lab blog. Also check out the Chroma Lab website here.
Great work Ila, Nate, and Chroma Lab!

I like the wall texture -
- but the whitewashed wood, stark white paint, polished chrome and crayola colors are saying "Mid-80's" to me.
bepsf: Well. watching all the hipster kids with their Elivis Costello Glasses, bright primary colored graphic prints, pointy flats and leggings, I'd say the 80s are back, baby!
Oh no though, what's next? Mauve?
Anyway, the one big element I love here is the teardrop shaped and mulit-colored paint elements. What a great idea to spruce up a boring plain rental bathroom or something.
Not my personal style but I respect a job well-done! Love the burlap, what a great idea. And the beadboard wainscoting too. Neat!
What's next, Lizzy? The return of...Memphis!
Two 80's inspired homes in one day; please, please, don't let this be a trend. Absolutely the ugliest decade I have lived through.
If you live in an old n' ugly house already, this would be a great temporary way of sprucing up things... Not in a million years would I ever think of it as a dream-bathroom or as inspiration if you already have a somewhat decent bathroom already. The medium-usage is interesting, but it doesn't really achieve an upcycling effect... it literally looks like what it is... cheap on cheap on cheap... and at the end way too much effort to install and take off when you finally hate it... which probably be around the same time you can afford better.
very cool, love the texture... .i'll probably just get these

and call it a day, though.
! I love bright and colorful bathrooms and this one fits the bill. So fun and doesn't feel 80s to me...
Is the burlap effectively sealed that way? I'd be worried about moisture retention and mold/mildew growth in a bathroom. It's a great-looking texture though.
Lizzy C, the return of mauve will be followed by the return of dusty rose, country-style stencilling, and cornflower blue.
Next thing you know, the kids will be displaying, ironically, ceramic geese with ribbons tied around their necks. The kind people got for wedding presents back in 1987.
Not that I would know anything about decorative country geese knick-knacks.
