Arktura's Hive Coffee Table: Sustainable Design, High Style

Inspired by all the design buzz circling NYC of late—Design on a Dime, BKLYN Designs, the upcoming ICFF—we felt inspired to beat yesterday's Sunday blues with a quick Monday-morning pick-me-up. The goal? Find a design "WOW" that's more than just a pretty face.

The Hive Coffee Table from California-based Arktura offered just the jolt we craved, a graphic, sculptural statement designed by Chris Kabatsi. The piece, which can also be used as a bench, is produced in a wind- and solar-powered facility from high-recycled-content steel with a zero-VOC powder-coat finish. Its corrugated cut-outs recall a bee hive, and its five bold color ways (including black and sea green) allow for both serious and whimsical applications. While the price point is certainly out of our reach (approaching a steep $1,800), it proves, yet again, that the prettiest furniture in the globe often treads lightly on the globe. And that, of course, is a teeny-bit-hopeful thought to kick off our week.
