Who knew the common button could be fashioned into something as beautiful as these
button bowls and trays? The effect is almost lace-like, a pliable doily constructed of hundreds of buttons stitched and knotted together, transforming the common into the sublime. A medium 16" tray is $45, a larger 18" version $50, and a set of three bowls for $96, all available from

well, I have seen these at my grandmother's place in the southern part of India. A teacher by profession, she had cows, hens, goats, cultivated rice, grew seasonal vegetables, grew tapioca, coconut, papaya, cashewnut, various kinds of root vegetables, cauliflower, carrots etc. She sewed and crocheted. Now and then she made crafts like the one said above. I remember this distincly because she made trays out of beads.
She is celebrating her 80th birthday next month and the last I heard of her she was now planning to grow rubber on her land.
That was the last generation!
