The design detail of having wood on the ceiling (or walls) is no longer something to wish you didn't have to live with. It's somewhat common in modern homes and seems to be coming back in to favor as even a purely decorative choice, not just a structural one.
You're super lucky if you live in a space that includes wood ceilings that are original to the house; then it's most likely in the best shape for showing it off. An interesting thing about wood plank ceilings is that they don't necessarily have to be paired with modern or traditional decor — they go both ways! Go all white for a modern Scandinavian look or try leaving the wood as is as a complement to a country color palette.

painting the wood ceiling white is great idea! It really opens up the space, while keeping the original wood structure.
My living room has a wood ceiling and though it's not original to the house, it is to the addition. It's made of pine, and while I love the look for the white wood ceilings above, I can't imagine painting mine.
Umm.... great cover photo but what is that black noose-knotted (restraint?) rope that runs through the truss over the bed?
where is that rug from on the first photo? I love it!
By far one of my favorite aesthetic values a home can have. So beautiful and rustic!
is that picture box of a turquoise sheet draped over a woman?
@itskevin: HAAAAAA!
Agreed, that first pic is the most lovely, serene bondage set up i've ever seen. I assume the paddles are thoughtfully stored in the bedside cabinets. Classy!
I installed a knotty pine plank ceiling in my recent kitchen remodel.....what was intended to be a quick, cheap alternative to boring drywall ended up being the highlight of the kitchen design. Best remodeling decision I made.....everyone who sees it absolutely loves it!
