Nomade Express Slee...
I have a demanding job where I deal with people all day. At the end of the day I am mentally exhausted and I cannot have anything more to do with people. The work has turned me into a bit of a social recluse.
My dream is a small, inexpensive and quiet place on a bit of land away from people. Just me and a huge stack of books!
I would love a quiet, lonesome retreat. Small, intimate, quiet, cozy--these are my watchwords!
Welcome to MY world. They like me here.
Oh how I dream of a return to nature, in a tiny little self-contained caravan or cabin. I obsess over vintage travel trailer and tiny home sites. Thanks for yet another site to live vicariously through. (Yeah, yeah, not grammatically correct ... I don't care.)
Oh yes! We are looking for an old, tiny house. But not too remote, rather in a small village and near a small city. Our kid needs to see people other than us!
We currently live in a 600 sf one bedroom, plus I have a painting studio separately. We really don't want much more than this.
Porn... really, again. There are SO many words in our language, why porn?
@ MANDYDAVIS Context is everything!
AND you have a 'dirty' mind. That to me is very offensive.
The need/quest for a cabin away from it all has always been in my thoughts. Even though I plan to move into a yurt in the coming months I still have this desire to build a cabin like something out in the back yard. I have my own little blog where I've featured cabins I've stumbled upon in my virtual as well as real life travels. Find it here. http://shackshedcabin.blogspot.com/ It's not as extensive as Cabin Porn's nor do I update it frequently. Still, there are some great examples there. Thanks for this great post!
i loooove this post. i feel like it was just for me, at just the right time. thanks, AT!
In defense of mandydavis, pornography actually refers specifically to obscene drawings, and is therefore not able to be contextualized ("cabin porn" doesn't make sense, because none of these photos are obscene).
As for the post, as an introvert that looks wonderful! For a few days, though, after a while I'd miss people.
In response to mandydavis and Hello123:
Merriam Webster defines porn as: "pornography."
Merriam Webster defines pornography as: "1: the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement; 2: material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement; 3: the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction <the pornography of violence>"
So, theoretically, you could defend the word choice in "cabin porn" by referencing definition 3. But, common knowledge is that "porn" is really in reference to definitions 1 and 2, and therefore "cabin porn" is still in bad taste.
In terms of actual cabins, I find that most of these are too ostentatiously modern to fall under my personal definition of "cabin." However I love the look of the last one! I'm sure the website has more of that nature, despite its awkward name.
I love the post but I agree with MANDY, I don´t see the conection between porn and the subjet.
'--- porn' is a shorthand expression commonly used to denote styled photos that are visually exciting ('food porn', 'garden porn', etc). Let it go & just enjoy the pretty pictures. Jeez.
I apologize for getting everyone all stirred up over the whole porn thing, but please understand that I live in Eastern Europe where human trafficking in a HUGE problem. Millions of women and children are sucked into this life and forced mainly into the sexual trade, which is where a majority of illegal porn is obtained. So for me the word porn carries a much deeper definition. I'm not saying that I don't understand the context of its use in this post or that it is offensive, just that there might be many other ways to convey the same message without the use of the word porn. And HELLO123, please remember that before you accuse someone of having a dirty mind, that many apartment therapy readers have suffered abuse at the hands of true perverts.
I agree with Mandy, the word tossed about so casually also makes me uncomfortable. Not only do I feel it to be in poor taste but I also feel it helps to desensitize and normalize porn in our society. (A society that is largely unaware of the rampant sexual abuse and illegal activity involved in the porn industry.) I would "let it go and enjoy the pretty pictures' if we just labelled them as such.
kitchen porn i totally understand, buti wouln't want to see children's playroom porn.
sorry about typos.
We rent the same log cabin in the Adirondak mountains, on a private lake, accessable only by a very trecherous dirt road with 4wd, 1 week every July for a decade with a few very quiet friends. The place is gorgeous in every way, right down to the cabin antiques. And the quiet cant be beat.
It's allowed me to bring back the cabin-feel to my own home a little at a time over the years. for cabin-fanciers, I highly recommend cabin-izing your own home. Woolrich flannel sheets, a tree trunk coffee table, artwork that includes trees, wood floors etc can all bring you to the same spiritual place, without the expense.
I too love The Adirondack Mountains ~ the people and the place, the hiking and the rental cabins. marvelous !
I live in Ontario, Canada where people are regularly trafficked from all corners of the globe.I am well aware of the problem.Everyone has the option of formal complaint to Apartment Therapy when you are offended by their editorials. That would be an appropriate way to deal with something you consider in poor taste.Too much effort for you?
Context IS everything.I still don't believe there was any ill intent, when using the word porn, in this editorial.Your offended?I understand that completely.Do something about it.Make a formal complaint, instead of a comment, that everybody has to 'understand' on your behalf.I have no context to understand your point because I think your making statements that are pointless in the context of this editorial. That still offends me.We are not discussing pornography here. You and a few others are.Very offensive to me,but you are entitled to express your opinions wherever please.Email AT and explain to them your upset by their use of words.
