Name: Cadence (2 months)
Location: Orlando, FL
I've never been a person who loved babyish spaces so when we found out we were expecting our first son, I knew I wanted to create a nursery for a little man instead of for a baby.
We wanted it to have meaning and be a space that he could grow into while still being calming and stimulating for him as a newborn. But most of all, we wanted to like the room since we have to be in there so much.
We decided to go with a "midnight sky" theme. We painted one wall in a dark navy blue and the rest in a stone colored white. Hand hammered metal stars and vintage astrological charts along with actual photos from the Hubble telescope came together in a gallery display on the accent wall over his crib. I made a mobile from Anthropologie's BHLDN line of metallic garland. We found an amazing globe ottoman at Urban Outfitters. Knobs from Anthropologie spruced up a white Ikea dresser, and a vintage record stand found at a local antique shop found a home on top of the dresser as a book stand. My husband's mom gave us the little drummer figuring which used to be my husband's. We put a drumstick and a vintage arrow in a little vase as a nod to our son's name: Cadence Archer. Inspired by another room here on Apartment Therapy, I made that light up canvas by painting a plain craft canvas with leftover wall paint and then punching little led lights through it. We also put little creatures of the night in the room... the little bat and chameleon were part of my beanie baby collection from my own childhood.

Very pretty
I really like the theme of this room. It's really great. Lots of nice touches. Well done!
Lucky baby.
Lovely room! I usually like rooms that are more babyish, but this is thoughtful and beautiful. My favorite bit is the vase with the drumstick and arrow. I agree, lucky boy!
Usually I think people choose bright colours in order to help develop baby's eyes- but youve added so much visual interest to this room that Im sure Cadence has tons of eye candy!!
I don't know...it's nice but I would worry that my baby's dendritic development would be under stimulated with the dark colors and lack of shapes. After all baby things look tacky and colorful for a reason. But I love the dark blue hue you chose! :)
I think people WAY overemphasize mental stimulation when it comes to baby rooms. I don't know about you but the only time my baby spends in her nursery is with her eyes closed, sound asleep. Waking hours are spent in the living spaces of the house or outside, with the rest of the family where there is PLENTY of stimulation. Older kids spend waking hours in their room, in my experience. Babies, not so much.
This room is very similar to what we have in mind for our little bun, whether it turns out to be a boy or a girl. Personally, I find navy (& this room) very soothing, without feeling like an ice cream parlor.
I can't comment on how much time a certain baby will be in a room, I was strictly speaking from a medical professional point of view. But if that were the case, then yes, the room would probably matter very little nellymom. You're right
This room is wonderfully simple in its furniture, decor, and color choices. Personally, I believe simple is best for a child's room, so they aren't being constantly bombarded by an overload of visual stimuli. Yes, babies need visual stimulation, but not an abundance to the point that they don't know where to look or what to focus on. The simple mobile above the changing table, for example, is perfect, especially if changed out overtime to renew interest.
I feel like babies will get plenty of stimulation from the colorful toys and I prefer having a more calm and soothing nursery as well.
I just found out last week that I am pregnant and I'm absolutely going to do something like this in the nursery, whether it's a boy or a girl! Possibly including an element or two from "Victor's Atomic Alien Invasion" for a bit of fun. :) My bf and I are addicted to space documentaries and I love the idea of introducing our little one to the beauty of the universe at a young age.
