This table and chairs, designed by Jesper K. Thomsen for Normann Copenhagen, reminds me of the pool furniture at my grandmother's apartment building… in a good way. I can almost smell those sunny days from when I was a kid, the chlorine in my hair and the cut grass. I'm fairly sure, however, that these woven leather seats wouldn't leave the same unsightly red marks on the backs of my legs—or if they did, it would be worth it. I'd endure quite a lot for the clean lines and elegant craftsmanship of these beauties. More from the collection, including the gorgeous daybed, after the jump…
The Camping series is not designed for actual outdoor use; rather, Thomsen has adopted and refined the forms and concepts of camping furniture for indoor living. The idea is to bring inside the sense of freedom and leisure that comes with outdoor recreation.
From a design perspective, Thomsen and Normann Copenhagen are interested in pursuing a New Danish Modern, using traditional methods and Danish materials to produce the landmark modern design that Denmark is known for. The Camping series, made from moulded beech wood and strips of leather, is produced by Kvist, one of Denmark's oldest wooden furniture factories (since 1896).
Thomsen talks about the design in a video interview here.
