Q: I see other people have written in to ask if readers might know what an object might have once been used for. Well, I am in the same boat and am curious if readers could help me decipher a purchase (larger photo below) I made at a yard sale in Boston. They are brass and have two "cups" (or what I guess they could be called)…
The larger "cup" rotates with a screw in the bottom to hold the cup down (but you can't rotate it to unscrew it) and the smaller "cup" has what looks like a knob that might have once been able to be turned but now is too rusty to move. The pipe that runs down to the base is hollow as if it once held wires or something. Could these be parts to old gas lamps? I have no idea what they are but love them and paid only $5 for the pair.
I am just curious to see what they might have originally been used for because I like learning the history of objects! Any help readers could offer me would be greatly appreciated!
