Q: I need a rug to cover the nasty carpet in my new apartment. Ideally, it would be something big, soft, and stylish but those are expensive. The indoor/outdoor rugs go for cheap, but are they insanely itchy?
Would I hate walking on them in my bare feet? Would I be able to sit on the floor and play video games if I had an indoor/outdoor rug in my living room?

Howard Butcher Bloc...
Really Sharon? Methinks you need to venture out into the wild blue yonder and, I don't know, touch some carpet samples.
Also, I've found that Homegoods, if you have any in your area, have some of the most reasonable prices for stylish modern rugs. Also, a friend of mine just bought a 9x12 solid shag for nearly $100 from home depot if you're ok with a simpler design.
Look for 100% PolyPropelene tufted In/out rugs. Many of them look and feel very similar to wool hand tufted or knotted rugs.
Trans Ocean Rugs have the Spello and Ravella collections that are a great example of this.
I don't know why I said 'also' so much. It's Monday...
We have a sisal rug (I supposed it's an outdoor rug) in our living room and and the older it gets softer it is. While it's not plush, it's sturdy!
We just bought one for our backyard. It isn't scratchy at all, but does feel a little plastic-y (which is great for outside). I actually might put one somewhere where you don't need it to be too cozy.

I'll second home depot - our living room rug gets compliments (it is a simple shag) and it was $150. We have a baby, so we're glad its not super expensive because it has gotten just about everything on it. It is really soft and doesn't shed like most of our wool rugs.
I have a plastic woven rug from 2modern

It has a bit of give so it's nice to walk on and the price means I could get a nice large rug for my living room
This is a photo of the rug in my living room

Dash and Albert makes great ones in fun patterns that feel as soft at their indoor ones!
The one I have inside has softened over time with vacuuming and cleaning and dogs rolling around on it.
World Market had some really pretty ones this summer, and now they're on clearance on their website. We got a really pretty yellow and blue one that we used inside for a while and then moved outside (it was too big for our kitchen). I think we spent around 50.00 for it.
Interesting, in addition to vacuuming them, how do you recommend cleaning them?
@jess13 -- Wasn't that a little harsh?
Agree with Nevanna. Little rude, there...
two words: Urban Outfitters. Their clothes and novelty items can be insanely expensive but their rugs, for some reason, are incredibly cheap and beautiful.
It all depends on the rug. Some are made to be a little more abrasive for scraping gunk off of shoes, but there are plenty others that are reasonably plush.
Bonus: You can hose it down to clean it if it can be used outdoors!
@Nevanna: I suppose you could look at it that way. I look at is as someone asking a question that is impossible for someone else to properly answer.
How on earth is someone going to know if someone else would hate walking on a certain rug in their bare feet? Feel is relative.
i think it depends, some outdoor rugs are made of more natural fibers, some are made out of recycled plastic bottles, but I think its a good idea. Check out http://www.homedecorators.com/Rugs/
for inexpensive rugs.
After an ongoing clothes moth issue, we dumped all of our wool rugs for synthetics. We love them! We have some of the sisal looking ones, and some traditional looking tufted ones, and a couple of "rag" looking ones. All of them feel pretty good... not at all plasticky. And they are a cinch to clean. Spill and accidents that would have caused a crisis with our old rugs are no problem now. I got most of our rugs from Overstock. We've had lots of positive comments, especially on this one we put in our guest room.
Agree with luckycharmer. Overstock has a large selection of attractive polypropylene rugs. I like the texture (similar to sisal) and ease of cleaning. I don't have to fight moths, and a bonus is that my cats seem to consider the rugs as a part of the floor, rather than fabric. All manner of stains wipe clean.
Also, look into sewing a DIY rug with fabric. Could be cheaper than buying a rug, plus you get to customize it more. I've sewn some from home decor fabric and chenille upholstery fabric purchased on clearance=very soft.
I'm afraid to purchase a rug from Overstock. They can't even give me a ball park on what the return shipping would be. :(
