Can I Transform this Townhouse to a Modern, Contemporary Style?

Good Questions

Q: We just moved to a townhouse that's around 23 years old. There's nothing big wrong with this one, but personally I'm big fan of modern and contemporary style, including art and furniture. I really want to remodel the handrail, replace the ceiling lamps, and redo the wall, but my friend told me not to.

The reasoning is that first, it costs a lot of money, and second, even if you make handrail in steel and paint the wall grey, it's still not going to be contemporary. To those who also love modern, clean contemporary style: should I remodel, or stick with what I have?
