Can I recycle a slate counter from our kitchen island to an outdoor table surface? We're renovating our home and I'd like to salvage and re-use as much as possible. The 7' x 2'6" honed, black slate slab topping the island is the perfect size and shape for an outdoor dining table.
We'd put it on metal or sturdy wood legs suitable for outdoor use in Toronto. Since it's so heavy, I'd like to leave it outside all year round, but it would be exposed to full sun in summer, snow in the winter, rain in the spring, and more than its share of bird poop. What should I do to protect it from the elements, and keep it looking smooth and good for many years?
