I recently stumbled across this stunning ad campaign and couldn't wait to get my hands on the company's catalog. Full of immaculate styling, vibrant colors and perfect lighting, I figured this was the work of the next big Anthropologie-esque home store. Turns out I was wrong. Can you guess who these ads are for?
If you guessed IKEA, you guessed right! It looks like the home goods giant has realized that not everyone craves the Scandinavian modernist style they've become known for. With obvious nods to Anthropologie and the movement toward rustic eclecticism, these images styled by Lo Bjurulf are simply breathtaking. And it's refreshing to see IKEA's products in a brand new setting.
What do you think of this new ad campaign?

White Enamel Flatwa...
Next time I decide to redecorate the horsebarn, I'll keep IKEA in mind...
Wow. Just goes to show that the ubiquity of Ikea furniture can really be modified with the accents.
Also, I was just thinking I needed a dining/pony area in my house. 2010 is going to be all about mini horse nooks.
Yay! I got it, too!
Who doesn't like a good guessing game? Can we get more of these?
"Mini horse nook" got me. Love it, want one.
the second pic gave it away for me. Those little white vases always make me think of Ikea.
Awesome though! Can't wait to hit up my Ikea in Austin!
IkeaPologie. Like it!
It's a beautiful ad campaign, but none of the stuff in the ad was really very modernist to begin with - put in a karlstad couch or a tylosand couch and see how it works then. Ikea can't convince people who don't like the modernist style to suddenly like it, but showing them $20 footstools probably won't get them in the door either since most of the items Ikea sells and wants people to buy are very modernist in style.
Not crazy about the barn look, but love the white dining area and definitely WANT the mini horse and dog!
Too easy.
I guessed IKEA after the second and third one, only because I have some of those items in my home! Very nice styling directors over there! :)
Without all the fabric and flowers and muting/tinting of the colors, it's still clearly Ikea.
Love it! I felt like some of Ikea's products were moving more this direction over the last several years, so it's nice to see their advertising follow suit and give those of us non-spare-modern-look-lovers a little more inspiration to go with their products.
I agree, though, that the mini horse was an odd choice--I'm all for equines gratuitously draped in swaths of fabric, but I think a standard sized horse or well-proportioned pony would've been a more stylish choice.
that third picture is a dream. Love the dog! I am a fan of this campaign, even though I never ever shop at ikea and probably won't start now.
The mushroom stools totally gave it away.
Yeah, I knew it was IKEA too from the first picture alone... that stepping stool and the flimsy curtains are a dead give-away.
No ad campaign is going to get me in there!!
got it 1st pic and still haven't looked at any of the other pics. so random!
I love IKEA. I love going to IKEA, I love hacking IKEA, I love using IKEA pieces in unexpected ways, I love when people don't recognize my IKEA. I think that IKEA is like a plain white t-shirt: you can wear it a thousand different ways (and "Scandinavian modernist" is only one of them).
oohee, ikea seems rather polarizing around here... all I can add to the discussion is that some of their stuff ages badly (like bookcases, but only after years and years) and others of their items amazingly really start to live after they've taken a beating by time, like the little Lack tables... I just dig them in a silly irrational way, the pieces mix in way better than when allowed to dominate, as in this nutty and fun campaign. ikea is always its own challenge. and it is FOR The People.
There are some things from Ikea that people would never guess is from Ikea - the only way to tell is the level of quality. The glass bottles in the third photo are an example of things that are FROM Ikea but don't scream "I'm from Ikea!"
We have Ikea things in our home, but they're relatively less Ikea-ish than others.
love the dining room table look in all white...and can i have that dog along with his huge water dish?
Ikea...I recognized many of the items from the store.
I guessed Ikea...I have some of those pieces...lol.
yeah, nothing really special. I'm not crazy about that carn table also, looks like an unfinished pine table i could get from a low price/quality mexican import furniture store.
And the dog bowl? I can see someone stumbling on it, or hitting it with a chair and it breaking into a million pieces.
stunning photos, but nothing too special as far as merch? am i right?
Well, I'm glad Ikea is branching out a bit...should be fun.
I guessed West Elm and CB2...
I am really digging the cute short wooden stools, and of course the bowls and plates off to the left of the fourth picture...kinda reminds me of the classic century line at C&B...but I bet this is a plate set I can afford to have a back-up of.
The dog is beautiful
can't wait for the catalog!
The first two pictures made me think it was dollhouse furniture -- something about the scale seemed wonky and miniature.
That ubiquitous little step stool in the first pic gave it away.
hmm Homeland Security?? no wait I know this one....uuuhhhhhhhh
Oh damn COMPANY sorry.. uuhhh can I get a hint? What country is this in?
I thought that bowl looked familiar.
Totally had no idea till that last pic, I was like "That lamp looks very Ikea-ish" :)
Wow - I guessed the Good Will store that I go to.
I guessed IKEA when I saw the Farm vases and the Hyllis shelves. Their stuff is awesome! You really can do anything with it!!!
Anthropologie
It seems as though they've been tapping into decorating blogs, where you see a lot of that airy, lived-in and romantic styling. I like it.
I like the dog. And the horse.
But I won't be fooled. Virtually everything I've ever bought from Ikea has either bored me or fallen apart almost immediately upon assembly. Save for that pine bookshelf I bought in 1992 that I somehow managed to put together so the sides leaned horribly but each shelf was perfectly level. I'll never part with it. It's art. (I think.)
Everybody should get loved at least once as intensively as IKEA gets hated by bepsf...
i'm pretty impressed and excited for the new catalogue. been jaded on ikea for a little while now and this looks refreshing. plus i can not in any way afford anthropologie so knock-offs make me happy
Walmart.
I guessed Pier One.
Ha. I've been trying to sneak IKEA into the bohemian look for a while now (because I'm really really really cheap, and IKEA is close), and now I can say I was on the cutting edge.
I really want the pony, too.
I love Ikea but the international versions always seem much more appealing than the U.S.
I guessed Ikea because I didn't see any furniture I liked. The photos have a nice mood to them though.
Okay, is this ANOTHER advertising gimmick???
IKEA did crossed my mind but my jaw is still dropped. VivaTerra was my first guess but soon remembered they're not that creative with their catalogs. Anthropologie was my 2nd guess.
IKEA? really?
oh, now I looked better and if I only had seen the baskets on the floor...
I agree that these are nice images, but most of the "warmth" in these settings comes from non-Ikea products--feathers, flowers, hay on the floor, etc. I'm not convinced!
Got it in one! Something about the step ladder, I think? Ah, Ikea, you're wonderful. As I sit at my Mikael desk reaching over to put something in my Expedit shelves, tossing a cozy Polarvide on my Malm bed, I reflect upon how I really am a walking advertisement...
(Hey, surfjack? ...Reckon that's maybe more your construction skills? My Ikea stuff is pretty sturdy!)
