Q: I found this chair on the sidewalk on trash day and rescued it a minute (literally) before the garbage truck came. (Sadly, I did not have enough time to save the lovely seventies rug that came with it). I had it reupholstered in Maharam fabric. Does anyone know anything about this chair?

I have no idea who made it, whether it was made in the US, in Denmark, or elsewhere, or even what wood it is made of. There is no stamp or tag. I am also not sure whether I love it as it is (with the new fabric) or not. So does anyone recognize this chair? And should I keep it, or not? Thanks for your advice!

I don't know who it is, but wow what a fab find! Good eye! ;)
It's pretty, though it doesn't look Danish--I'd wager American. I like the fabric a lot; it's got a midcentury feel without being kitschy. Not that I don't like me some midcentury kitsch. Why wouldn't you keep it?
It has wonderful lines. Great find! I'd replace the fabric, but who knows what your decor is like - it might match.
I don't know, either, but I found one, too! Score!
Who in their right mind would throw away a chair like that. Good for you, excellent find!
It reminds me of my late grandmother's old chairs. She got them in the 70's. Hers were Danish, but I'm not sure if these are as well. Really cool find. :)
I don't know what it is but the Maharam fabrics look great with it.
You reupholstered it with Maharam fabric before you were sure you'd keep it?
Fantastic find, btw.
Please, if you opt to eliminate it from your decor, LET ME KNOW! It is gorgeous!
Love the fabric. Great choice & great find.
With a chair that beautiful, who cares who made it? And perfect choice on the fabric, you DO have a great eye. Makes me wonder about the rest of your place, is it as lovely as I think it is?
Off hand i'd guess Danish, since the curves suggest a Finn Juhl-esque piece. Great find at any rate- I'm not even into MCM and *I'd* keep it!
You should ask Peter Galbert - I saw his work on Fine Woodworking once and it has some of the same lines. Maybe he can ID your chair.

No you definitely should not keep it- I'll take it off your hands for no charge ;-)
There is a danish furniture maker on the tip of my tongue. Hard to recall through my grandfathers accent but he had a chair shipped to New Zealand (where he had emigrated)... will get back to you when I remember.
Start googling Danish Modern Teak Chairs. Kai Kristiansen. etc. What a phenomenal find! I can't believe someone tossed that.
Okay, now I remember, the maker I was thinking of is France & Daverkosen, which was later known as France & Søn. If there are no maker's marks however, it may not be this, but perhaps a US maker doing their own version. That void at the back of the frame is quite unique. Sorry no answer, but keep hunting!
Arne Vodder might be another name to check out!
It's very similar to a chair I have that my mom won on a radio contest back in 1960. The colours are awesome.
I just found that chair on another house tour. But they don't know the designer as well http://www.designsponge.com/2010/11/sneak-peek-brian-everett.html
It looks Kofod-Larsen-ish.
I found a very similar on in LA craigslist http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/fuo/2992895011.html
The description says it's a danish mid century modern lounge chair by John Stuart

its got similar curvy lines to the chair in the link above...
Could be a Torbjorn Afdal, or a knock off. Very pretty chair!
Love the chair, like the fabric, but the cushions aren't doing it for me. Are they comfy? I think I would have chosen more pillow-like cushions that you can sink into, less boxy.
That is a great rescue chair. It looks like a 50s/60s chair from Yugoslavia. I have seen several that have the same seat base, just not as cool on the arms and side. If you look up Yugoslavian mid century chairs you'll see similar ones. Generally there would be a small Yugoslavia sticker on the bottom but those don't always make it. I'm not sure what the wood is but it probably isn't what you think. Don't sand it. I think it has a solid stain that resembles walnut but really isn't. Still a cool chair, nice upholstery. If you don't want it I'm sure you can find someone that does.
I have a chair form the 60's that is missing some of the rubber coated wire loops exactly like the ones that support the cushions on this chair. Anyone know where I can find replacements? Thanks.
It is most likely made by Selig.
ugh. i am kinda falling in love with this chair. came back just to see if anyone ID'd it. where do you live where people would consider something like this garbage?
not obsessing or anything...but these are the kind of cushions I think I would go for....but your fabric choice is just as nice.

ps. i am starting to wish i had never seen this chair, because now I kinda need one.
I'm jealous!
If it doesn't have a stamp or tag, or a the sign of and old lost one, it's definitely not Danish. And as a Danish Interior Designer, I can tell you that sadly it is not a Danish chair, it looks quite like one, but the seat wire, and the curvy back legs is not of Danish descent. But lovely chair, congratulations on the save!
Looks like something from Ole Wanscher
I second the Selig.
I have the SAME chair too!!! (mine looks like one of the front corners on the arm was dinged off...bummer). I ALSO have the matching couch. The chair has no markings, however the word "ITALY" is stamped on the couch frame in some sort of light metallic ink....
Thank you all for your comments! I tend to agree with Laura2450: I don't think it is a Danish chair and the Yougoslavian/Italian/European suggestion seems more plausible to me (judging by the type of wood and seat wire) but I still haven't found the exact same one anywhere else.
To answer some questions: I live in Boston and the chair was thrown away by (I think) an elderly neighbor... This is the second time in a year that I see a nice mid-century chair on the sidewalk near my house -- clearly my neighbors do not have a sense that some people actually LOVE this kind of furniture. And people are wasteful in my neighborhood: I could have furnished an entire house with items thrown in the trash these past years. And yes, Emmelemm, I reupholstered with a (cheap) piece of Maharam fabric found on www.newtoto.com. I figured that if I did not like the result, I could always sell it on CL - I did not spent much. I like the result (visually), but a) it is not very comfy and B) my husband doesn't love it. I am still thinking about it and you may find it on Boston CL one day. For me, the fun is to salvage/recycle/transform, but I do not need more furniture. Voilà!
