Q: I picked up a pair of cantilever chairs from Craigslist. The seller mentioned that they have been in their home for 35 years and were probably from a company called Fairchild where someone from his family worked. I like the chrome yellow color, the fabric is in decent shape (may consider reupholstering later) and they are amazingly comfortable! I would like to know more about these chairs and am hoping Apartment Therapy fans can tell me more. Thanks !

Those look very like some rose colored ones in the Library where I work -- commercial office/library side chairs from the late 1980's, if so.
That is a Brno Chair, originally designed by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich (who were a couple) during the Bauhaus period. (around the mid 1920-30s) The other famous chair of this time period is the Barcelona Chair.
Sorry, but that is not a Brno chair. The chrome on a Brno chair wraps behind and continues to the other arm, not down the way this one does. Also the Brno chair was not designed with tufted back and seat cushions.
It's a cool chair though. I have done a little research and can't find much about the chair pictured, but does it matter? If you love the chair and it's comfortable then that is all that matters.
Looks like Steelcase to me. We have some in my office.

Right, definitely not a Brno chair, though both do have a sled base. I think it's just a nice office chair.
It's an old Steelcase office guest chair. Or a pretty good knock off - and there were many companies who tried to knock this off because it was a HUGE seller. I have seen many in my 20+ years in the office furniture industry. Many were sold in between the 70's and 90's. It's since been discontinued. I think it's the 422 chair. I sell Steelcase. It's a great chair. Very retro.
Correction. It's the Steelcase 421 chair. The 422 may have been the swivel desk. If you do an online search of "Steelcase 421" you'll find a variety of information and other people selling this now discontinued chair.
yes, definitely Steelcase! my dad works at the Steelcase plant in Grand Rapids, Michigan and my parents have the same chairs in red in their basement! I recognized them right away.
Strange to see this come up, as my office is FULL of these chairs. I'm looking at three of them right now!
Looks like an office chair to me. Don't let the fact you haven't found the "it" chair from teh "it" century put you off. Everything that was once a discard needed someone to see it anew and reimagine it into an interior. Today these chairs are plentiful. A few years from now, after they've been shown upcycled into interiors, people won't be able to find them anywhere.
you may (or may not be) interested to know that these chairs reside in the chorus and ballet dressing rooms of the Metropolitan Opera. Very comfortable while one waits to be called to stage....
