A few weeks back we featured lamps that were made from salt. This chair and desk/lamp combo are also made from something rather unusual. Can you tell what it is?

...sugar cane! Chen Wei-Che and Chung Yo-Hsun noticed a by-product of the sugar cane industry going to waste in Taiwan. This fiberous bi-product is called bagasse and for every 10 tons of sugar cane that are processed, there are 3 tons of wet bagasses that gets thrown away or burned.

Many great innovations come from having an excess surplus of something. They add a little paper pulp and a few other stabilizing products to the mix and then press it to a mold, just like you would paper mache'. The result is a textured product that holds shape and can be used without crumbling.

I love seeing new things come from items that have gone by th way side in the past, and these sugar cane pieces of furniture are no different. Check out more photos of their work over at Design Boom.
