...sugar cane! Chen Wei-Che and Chung Yo-Hsun noticed a by-product of the sugar cane industry going to waste in Taiwan. This fiberous bi-product is called bagasse and for every 10 tons of sugar cane that are processed, there are 3 tons of wet bagasses that gets thrown away or burned.
Many great innovations come from having an excess surplus of something. They add a little paper pulp and a few other stabilizing products to the mix and then press it to a mold, just like you would paper mache'. The result is a textured product that holds shape and can be used without crumbling.
