Huge rugs are luxurious but not always necessary. You really can get away with skimping on the size if you try these tricks. You'll still get all the punch of a stylish rug, but without the monster rug price.

Embrace Jute

Found a rug style you really love but can only afford a size that's smaller than what you need? Snap it up and then get yourself an inexpensive larger jute rug to layer underneath. Don't think of it as a compromise — the neutral jute will actually frame your statement rug and make it stand out that much more.

Scatter several smaller rugs

Whether you want several of the same style or a colorful mix like this room above from Desire to Inspire, smaller rugs can mold to any style which is especially helpful to visually break up an open-concept space into zones.

Score the right shape

If you have an open area with curves or an unusual shape, you might feel like you want to cover the area completely and be done with it. Hold on! Finding the right shape means you can get away with a much smaller rug that fits your space perfectly.

Only put it where you need it

Tiffany's bedroom doesn't need a big rug because she steps out of bed and into her slippers. So rather than spending money on a room-sized rug to cover every inch, she got strategic with a lux sheepskin. You can pull that trick anywhere you like. Specific rugs for specific purposes. Winning.
