Your Favorite Thing About Your Outdoor Space: My favorite thing is being able to grow tomatoes, blackberries, raspberries, zucchini, blueberries, carrots, rainbow chard and herbs and then incorporate them into meals eaten right on the patio.
Biggest Design Challenge With This Space: I rent my apartment, so I am not allowed to make any real changes to the space. The metal structure had an ugly dark green plastic roof from the 1960s the first summer I spent in this apartment. Luckily last year New York had so much snow, the plastic collapsed and I got to have it removed. I spent $20 on the white canopy and it looks so much more modern, plus now that it doesn't cover the whole patio, I can grow more plants and vegetables in the increased sunlight.
Tips for Creating a Great Small Outdoor Space: I wanted to use my patio for dinner parties as well as growing fruit and vegetables. I found a table that can seat 14, but easily folds down to give plenty of room for moving around my fruits and vegetables. The christmas lights around the canopy aren't the most attractive during the day, but they are durable and they define the dining area at night so it feels cozier. I wanted a potting bench, so I chose one on wheels that could easily be turned into a bar or serving space for food.
Thanks, Caroline, and good luck!
