We live in loft in downtown Minneapolis. Our green space is a center courtyard. Two years ago a 50 foot tall Oak tree died and was cut down leaving an empty and ugly planter box. This year i got approval for a new tree and and a budget for plants. I wanted something fun and was inspired by Dale Chihuly's garden installations.
A few trips to the neighborhood nursery, farmer's market, Home Depot and Homegoods yielded us our new garden. An Inverleith Scotch Pine surrounded by classic blue hydrangeas and wave petunias anchors the box. The glass pieces ($9.99-$16.99) add a touch of whimsy. Mini globe solar lights outline the perimeter of the box. The front pots were also updated to go with our art moderne building. lastly we have heirloom tomato and herb pots. Next up is to checkerboard the dirt patch at the end of the box with stone squares and sod.
Thanks, Casey!

love this idea (love chihuly too)... the glass pieces are from homegoods?
yes, susan. they are just vases in different sizes flipped upside down.
These are in my uni's library. They are very beautiful:

I saw these on Gardeners Supply the other day and was thinking "Chihuly". Maybe they might find their way to Minneapolis! :)

Very cute way to make that space work. Fun and unexpected.
Very cute garden. I love Chihuly too. It would be great if one could have a small pond with some Chihuly pieces floating on it!!!
