When Cassandra moved into her Victorian house a few years ago, the walls had been newly painted a dusty yellow color. Overwhelmed by the idea of repainting on top of moving in, Cassandra put it off…until now: "We desperately need a good paint job," she says. "We don't plan to move for another year or two, so I see painting as a way to make the apartment feel fresh and new again." We teamed up with Glidden Paint this summer to work with Cassandra and two other renters and help them explore how color can transform a rental into a home.
Cassandra wanted a cool grey to replace the warm yellow in her bedroom. Nicole Balch, Colortopia Team Member and author of the blog, Making It Lovely, sent over 3 Glidden Paint options: Smoky Charcoal, Dolphin Grey and Polished Pewter. Cassandra wanted a rich grey to make her bedroom feel more cozy, but she didn't want it to feel too dark, so she went with Dolphin Grey, a medium grey with lavender undertones.
The result is a cool, cozy grey that perfectly complements the bright teal and red of Cassandra's bedding and curtains. And now Cassandra is inspired to keep on going! "Well this room now looks so fresh and bright that it just makes me want to tackle all the other rooms!"
Now Cassandra's bedroom is no longer a temporary landing pad decorated with someone else's choices. It's a fresh, cozy space that matches Cassandra's taste.

Sheex Bedding
I like it. It's a very soft gray, not cold at all.
This is interesting. I just painted my kitchen a very similar grey and I hate it. I've been thinking of repainting it a yellowy-beige similar to the Before. Generally I hate beige and love grey but I guess it just doesn't work in my kitchen or maybe my tastes have changed.
Ooops. I thought the after was just a continuation of the before.
Both colors are nice to my eyes.
:)
looks lavender, pretty.
Looks lavender on my screen, too, and I like it better than what was there before.
Although I like it with the yellow accents (lamp base and pillows) and the colorblock art thing on the wall, I find that the blue bedcover and rust red curtains were chosen to go well with the pale yellow - and they don't look good with the lavender to me - I'd replace them with colors that look good with the lavender/grey.
I was totally blown away by how lavender the paint looked once we had it on the walls. When my husband and I first looked at the swatches, the color seemed much more blue-grey. I guess this means that if you truly want to know what color you're getting, you need to paint a fairly large test swatch.
Fortunately, I'm a fan of the new color. Thanks again to Apartment Therapy and Glidden for helping me redo my bedroom.
Also, I posted additional photos at www.urbancholita.com if anyone wants to see a few more before/after shots.
Did she say 8 1/2 years without painting? Wowza.
Nope. Not 8 1/2. Only 3 1/2. And the place had just been painted when we moved in.
