A ceiling fan is one of those necessary evils in a home. Oftentimes, craftsmanship and style are sacrificed on behalf of practicality. Besides, who's looking at the ceiling anyway? Well, if you're lucky enough to have a ceiling fan made by the Woolen Mill Fan Company, everyone should see it.
Not only do plants improve air quality, having a child care for a plant is a useful way to teach responsibility. Provided your child is old enough not to eat or touch them, easy-to-care-for succulents are a good place to start. Better yet, put them inside a dinosaur planter.
Q: I'm considering buying an air purifier, but I wanted to see what other's experiences have been. Is it worth it? Will I notice a marked improvement in how I feel and sleep? And what about cost differences? Will getting a cheap air purifier work, or will I be wasting money?
My sister and brother-in-law were visiting us in Paris this past week and all was going well until late one night, the macerating toilet in the guest bath just went kaput. Our good-natured guests decamped to a hotel down the block (the only other toilet in the apartment is in our bedroom, making late-night bathroom runs a potential British farce) and we called a plumber. What we learned was this: the notorious calcium in the Paris water supply had built up over time in the motor of the toilet causing it to just give up.
The other day while walking to the subway I saw a stunning little 1970's orange Volkswagen Bug for sale. I'm not actually in the market for a car, but I still stopped to admire it since I've always loved Bugs. But it's indicative of my state of mind—both personally and professionally— that the immediate thought following my burst of enthusiasm was "Ooohhh... the emissions and gas mileage have to be terrible on this car. It's probably horrible for the environment." Which brings me to greater food for thought: what is our responsibility as conscious consumers when vintage options are worse for the environment and/or our health?
At quick glance, the appliance above looks like a mainframe computer, circa 1988. But inside the IQAir HealthPro Plus system's industrial case comes the most serious air purification we've ever tested. This past weekend we ran a battery of tests using a laser particle reading device in a real world environment (our apartment), checking if all the hype about this machine was a bit of balderdash or really the mean clean machine promised by IQAir, pitting it against two other consumer grade HEPA air purifiers. Check out how each air purifier performed after the jump...
Ahh, crawl spaces - those lovely subterranean areas that often consist of dirt, cobwebs and feelings of claustrophobia. Even though we may try to avoid them, improving an existing crawl space is actually an important step in greening your home. Retrofitting these areas not only addresses energy efficiency and moisture problems, but for those living in a small home, they can also be turned into valuable storage space!
As trees start blooming and everything seems to be sprouting new growth, we're amazed at the wealth of scents outside. If you want to bring spring inside, we've got a few tips to freshen and lighten up the air in your home!
We're always joking around at the Unplggd office about how easy it would be to implement sci-fi elements into our homes without making it look like something out Tron, but we never feel like the tech has ever been well-implemented. Until now, of course, where we're finally starting to see the first baby steps in the exploration of USB-powered desk fans...
Whether you work in a cubicle, an open plan office or at home, fresh air is key to health and productivity. According to NASA research, adding at least one potted plant per 100 square feet of floor space drastically improves the air and reduces symptoms of "sick building syndrome" (SBS), caused by common chemicals and products. Here are the top plants to grab up during your spring cleaning, to help make a better, healthier office environment.
