The Americans is a new television drama that is bringing a not-currently-in-favor era back into style with mustard yellow and high wasted jeans. The early
1980’s style of the kitchen in The Americans is bringing back wood paneling and
Harvest Gold appliances, but there is a modern way to get the early 80’s look
without the formica.
Dyson AM05 Hot + Cool Fan Heater
The engineers over at Dyson must have been eavesdropping upon conversations my girlfriend and I have had for years. "It's too hot". "Brrr, it's too cold!" In either situation, their latest update to their bladeless fan heater line should come in handy. The AM05 improves upon their previous model with a 33% increase in air velocity, meaning whomever gets to the remote control first (which magnetically sticks to the top of the fan at the top) will get cooler or warmer in faster time than ever, supposedly costing 30% less than your typical space heater. Also, check out the newest sleek all-nickel finish!
So you've found a perfectly charming vintage apartment that you're sure to make into a happy home. The only problem? A dated kitchen lacking mod cons, like a built in dishwasher. Never fear! There are countertop dishwashers to save you from hours spent over a sudsy sink.
It's an age old question: "do I keep it or toss it?" This is of course pertaining to food in the fridge that's been sitting there for a questionable period of time after a power outage. We refer you to our U.S. government guidelines on food safety, recommending just how long our refrigerators and freezers will hold their temperatures, as well as whether to keep or discard food kept inside during a power outage.
Most of us learned the hard way during our teenage years about clothes washer settings (red socks + white shirt mishaps, anyone?). But there are lessons beyond separating our colors from our whites. Find out what those temperature and cycle settings on your washing machines actually mean for an optimal laundry cycle.
We live in a disposable society where perfectly repairable items are discarded before their time. But thank goodness for people like tommyfilth over at DeviantArt, who turned an old Kitchenaid mixer into something every Mandalorian bounty hunter loving fan will recognize at just a glance...
Sure, Samsung's $3999 flagship refrigerator is pretty impressive on both the technology and design tip, as reported when we were scouring and reporting from the floors at CES. But what we really wanted to report previewed behind closed doors and we had to promise to stay mum about it until this week...
When using appliances like washing machines and dishwashers - putting soap in and taking clean things out - one can sometimes forget that the appliance itself needs a good cleaning now and then. And boy, did my top-loading workhorse need it. To tell you how much, I'll just say two words: Cloth. Diapers.
I've become increasingly particular about how I make coffee at home. I'm still pretty easy going about the quality of a cup of good morning from a coffee shop or restaurant, but at home, I tend to geek out with a carefully concocted cup (two at most). This means starting off with freshly roasted whole beans (my current bean of choice), filtered water, a digital scale, a manual burr grinder, and an Aeropress...it's a morning ritual which doesn't cater to the "get caffeinated as quick as possible" mentality. But as one special agent professed, the measured process produces "a damn fine cup of coffee". Thus, I approached moving over to a one-touch automatic espresso maker with a bit of trepidation. Coffee in capsules? Bah! [Puts on coffee snob mustache]...
