Have you seen the inspiring structure that dutch architect Winy Maas has created for the town square in the center of Schijndel, a small town in the Netherlands? The glass facade of the mixed-use retail and office building presents an image of a traditional dutch farmhouse, printed using fritting technology, which allows huge amounts of natural light to flood the space. "We're starting a family, so we had to move out of the city." You hear this all the time, and for one good reason: high housing prices mean there most often simply isn't space to raise a family in an affordable apartment in the city. Super small and modular in construction, the 55 units will range from 250 to 370 square feet. Jump below for a look at one of the floor plans and a rendering of the interior... More
The translucent Meme Meadows House in Japan is a lovely example of minimalist architecture. More importantly, though, it's an experimental house, built by design firm Kengo Kuma and Associates to test heating methods in extreme climates — with plenty of inspiration from the traditional building methods of the Ainu people. Not too long ago, the idea of sod roofs conjured images of traditional, pretty homes in Scandinavia and Iceland. Now, their popularity means they also conjure up images of city lofts and modern homes. More
