In small homes, the bathroom in particular can be really pressed for space. I know that in my own small house (not as tiny as my old apartment, but well under the average size in my city), it's difficult coming up with enough wall space for towel bars. We have hooks and bars on the back of the door, but I'm always looking for alternatives since that's not ideal. One solution I'm eyeing is the 12-inch towel bar:

Last week we were introduced to Faith and Mike's master bathroom project. Rather than renovate an existing bathroom, they're getting really ambitious and creating a master bathroom out of whole cloth in a space that was once a sleeping porch. Here, they share some of their inspiration for the project.

All of our Renovation Diary projects so far have been kitchens, but this time we're bringing you something a little different — a bathroom renovation, or rather, a bathroom creation, completely from scratch. Faith Durand, who you probably know as the editor of our sister site The Kitchn, is here to share with us the joys and trials of turning a sleeping porch in her 1920s home into a brand-new bathroom.
You know those shower caddies that hang over the shower head? Or shelves that suction-cup onto the wall? They're fine for adding storage, but they do take up space, which can become a nuisance in a small bathroom where elbow room is lacking anyway. That's why we love the idea of shower niches recessed between the studs in the shower wall.
MoreNight lights aren't just for kids. They are great in the bathroom, keeping you from stubbing toes during night-time visits. They're also a cool alternative to votive candles to create mood during parties.
MoreMany of us like to listen to music, podcasts, or the radio while we administer our daily ablutions in the bathroom, on that we can agree. But there are a few bathroom entertainment topics which bring out differences in opinion: whether or not we sound good singing along in the shower and just which features our bathroom audio devices should sport.
MoreIt doesn't take a jug of toxic chemicals to clear most slow or clogged drains. A drain auger can help cut through the hair, grease and food that's clogging a drain without flushing chemicals through to the water system.
I grew up in an old house: it was 100 years old when I was in high school, which means today it is... slightly older than 100 years old. My parents' house is a beautiful and charming Victorian with stained glass windows, carved woodwork, and the worst shower in the world. Even though I moved out years ago, I still have to remind myself every day that it doesn't take all showers 10 minutes to warm up...
One is a concept, two is a coincidence, and three, well...that just might be a trend. But we guarantee this is the weirdest trend you'll see all day: home offices sharing space in the master bathroom.
