Uhuru designers were inspired by Brooklyn's own Coney Island and used salvaged ipe — a generic term for exotic Brazilian hardwood — from the Coney Island boardwalk for these playful designs.

When they receive felled trees that were cut down due to construction, disease and other factors outside of commercial tree harvesting, Eric salvages these trees for his designs, and saves them from being left to rot, chopped up for firewood, or dragged to a landfill. There were some great finds at BKLYN Designs this year. The show included all kinds of decorative items from handmade wooden furniture to wall accents to electronic installations, all from local Brooklyn-based companies. More

The founder, Andrea Summerton, makes it a point to use only safe, non-toxic, and environmentally sustainable materials in her design construction. The furniture collection we saw at BKLYN Designs is constructed from formaldehyde-free bamboo and finished with tung oil, an all-natural, zero VOC, water-resistant finish. More
