It's funny what you can find when you peek around the quieter corners at the CES show floor. Amongst the sexy showcases of "the future is now" technology like OLED or 8K resolution televisions, razor thin ultrabooks, and a dizzying amount of handheld tablets/smartphones are a few smaller solutions easily passed over. Here's one we think we believe a great many households not only may want, but can also afford... More
Did you see the news about Japan offering their 1st 3D television series? 3DTV adoption rates have been modest at best, but if CES 2011 was any indicator, manufacturers are not letting up and the technology is just getting started. Mistubishi stuck to their big screen heritage, with their booth this year showcasing supersized 3D displays, the largest being a 92" DLP screen which put out a beautiful image in both 3D and 2D modes (note the comparison to a 46" screen above and you can better appreciate the size of this monster). There was also a more "modest" 82" 3D display and an array of LED LCD displays, laser equipped displays and perhaps most impressively, a 155" OLED meant for commercial use, but obviously hinting at a consumer future offering whole wall entertainment displays. The Samsung CES booth was filled with plenty of eye candy and arguably had the most decor-friendly home theater and computing products on display at this year's show. An example of this commitment to design for the home, and also marketed as the thinnest Blu-ray player, is this sculptural 5.1 wall-mountable home theater system, the Samsung HT-D7500W. More
At the start of every year, for the last several years, I've made the four and a half hour journey from Los Angeles across the desert to Las Vegas to attend the annual Consumer Electronics Show, a spectacular marketing circus where thousands of exhibitors from all over the world converge to showcase the latest and soon to be greatest technologies destined for our homes. It was amongst this year's 140,000 industry professionals I got the opportunity to try out several soon-to-be released electronics, preview a handful of on-the-horizon technologies and take note of several trends which will soon be making it into many of our homes in the next year or two… More
We are huge fans of Etsy artisans and all things DIY, so it is no surprise that we checked out what CES 2011 had to offer in the craft department. Amidst all the gadgetry we found a few tools that are quite interesting and innovative with lots of potential. Now, if we could only find an embroidery machine that will play nicely with a Mac... While perusing the many booths of CES 2011, a brightly colored banner caught our eye. iCADE, could it be? Here at CES? Yes, it was there in all its iPad gaming glory. What we first spotted as an April Fool's joke on ThinkGeek, we were able to scope out in the halls of CES during its real world debut. More
The Motorola Xoom tablet received high praise and great interest during CES for a variety of reasons, but it was actually its smaller sibling, the Motorola ATRIX 4G, which impressed us with its differentiating features which bridged the smartphone category nearly over to laptop capabilities/utility: a dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU, 4" touchscreen 960x540 display, and most notably, a laptop dock which converts the ATRIX into a powerful, quasi-netbook of sorts. We like many others mourned the loss of Polaroid classic instant film (our Impossible Project stash is gone). The 600 instant film is something we love to use in our vintage Polaroid cameras and is truly iconic. When we spotted the large Polaroid booth at CES, we could not help but be curious about what they were up to in 2011. More
