Dark blue is one of those paint colors that is safe but still makes a statement. It can make a room look nautical, traditional, or Mediterranean. In a bathroom, I personally love when it is paired with wood details or white tiles.
A soft, rosy pink kitchen can be quaint and homey, but a bright pink one demands to be noticed. There's no two ways about it — as an accent touch or a whole kitchen, bright pink is a bold color choice. It's not a color for the faint of heart, but it will always make an impression.
I like to play with the feel of interiors, throwing together things that you might not always think to combine. One of my favorite looks at the moment is something I like to call 'dark feminine,' which pairs things that we traditionally associate with 'feminine' decor — curves, intricate patterns, soft fabrics, flowers — with dark, moody colors. The result is mysterious, intriguing, and unexpectedly modern.
It's fun to talk about color and, in particular, how different shades shape how we think, feel and behave. Whether it's due to biology or conditioning, there are lots of thoughts about what colors to use in order to elicit desired mood and actions. Here are some of my favorite stories, and the theories behind them:
A colorful chair can really make a statement in a room whether it's the one focal point for a bright, "look at me" color or to reinforce an existing color scheme. For the nursery and kid's room, I've put together a collection of bright and daring rockers and gliders that can either complement your decor or punch it up.
Even with white or neutral walls, a room can still feel colorful with a few well-placed accessories. One that can make a big impact on the room is an area rug. Area rugs generally cover a large amount of square footage, and as a result can really make quite a color statement. Here are a few of my favorite children's rooms in which the rug is the star of the show:
Sure you can paint a desk. But instead, if you're a busy Mom like me, or if you simply love the finish of a professional paint job, you can buy one ready made. Here is a rainbow of desks, from both high and low price points for kids.
Fresh, sophisticated, and calming, dark green makes the kitchen a perfect spot for sharing a some food prep, a glass of wine, and some conversation. Mixed with fresh whites and warm metals, this verdant hue can give any kitchen a novel and natural look. Why settle for buying and eating greens when you could also live with them?
There may be nothing more daring than painting your walls black. I was surprised to find such a wide variety of blacks, from deep dark greys to blue toned blacks. Painting your walls such a deep hue works especially well in sun-filled rooms where the black can reflect beautiful light. It can also turn a room very masculine, so it works best balanced with textural and more feminine details. Here are some shades to get you inspired!
