We are a bit nostalgic and love children's rooms with a vintage look, bright, colorful but not too “themey” and we wanted this space to reflect Pedro's character and heritage. Basically a room that would make our small Peter Pan dream, play and create his own magical world.
Earlier this month, I gave you a peek inside a backyard in Brooklyn, courtesy of the folks over at Lonny magazine. It was over-the-top bohemian — a very stylish look, but the majority of readers agreed that this laid-back, eclectic style was anything but practical. This time around, I thought I'd delve into our archives to show you outdoor spaces emanating a slightly bohemian vibe that are a bit more realistic and attainable.
Name:Christi Jay - artist/designer Location: Echo Park; Los Angeles, California Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 2 years
Christi is a fashion designer who also has a genuine talent for making beautiful sculptural artwork. Christi created the geometric piece on the living room coffee table from branches from her backyard. You might also notice a few other more of her designs in the same room that she uses as plant hangers.
Allison & Luke Location:
The Castro; San Francisco, California Size:
715 sq. ft. Years lived in:
2 years; Rented
It all started with a table. While visiting a
friend recently I remarked on her amazing barn wood kitchen table, “Oh, it’s
not mine. It’s on loan from a friend. Seriously, though — you should see the rest
of her place.”
Name:Caroline Lizarraga, her son Sebastian and their pug Brunello. Location: Western Addition; San Francisco, CA Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: 3 years
Caroline's expertise as an artist and designer is realized not only through her clients' spaces, but also in her own home. She has curated a collection of treasures in her two bedroom flat that celebrate the people, places and things she loves most. As owner of her interior design company she has an incredible eye, but her true craft is working with her hands. Caroline paints spectacular wall murals, one of which is showcased on the walls around the fireplace in her living room.
Bohemian style isn't for everybody. The word can conjure up images of a certain mishmash messiness that can make the neat and orderly run the other way. But if you're drawn to this eclectic, carefree look yet are still afraid to commit to it inside your house, perhaps blending it into your outdoor space is the perfect solution!
Name:Janelle Pietrzak, textile artist/weaver, and Robert Dougherty, welder and carpenter Location: El Sereno; Los Angeles, California Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 1 year
Janelle and Robert moved from Philadelphia a year ago. It was time for a change, and Janelle accepted a job in Los Angeles. At the time, their decor — taxidermy, rustic Americana — was a reflection of the East Coast, where they both grew up. But that was before they fell in love with LA.
My inspiration for this Dorm Style roundup was the casual, laid-back cool of Los Angeles. In fact, I found so many pieces to fit this style that I coudn't resist creating two inspiration boards, each at a different price point. So no matter your budget, there's something here for you.
I have a deep appreciation for the artistry that goes into making different textiles. Whether you buy them as souvenirs as a tourist or order from afar, textiles can bring worldly charm and vibrant pattern to many different surfaces and spots in your home.
