What I Love About My Small Home:
When I first moved to the Bay Area, I lived with my sister and brother-in-law on a misty piece of land bordering the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Confronted by the untenable cost of Bay Area rent and presented with the exciting news there was a niece on the way, I set to converting a small existing structure on the far edge of their property. I designed my 231 sq ft dream studio and have enjoyed choosing every element. I wanted my home to feature a large painting that I made, so I drafted the wall behind my bed to be it’s exact width. I love entertaining, so I created a backyard space that doubles my living area, with a deck, fire pit and hammock. Between the bountiful natural light, high ceilings, white walls and tucked-away storage, I never feel cramped in my technically teeny tiny home. My niece Mabel is now 3 and my nephew Abram is 1. Living in my studio enables me to be a big part of their lives, yet have my own space, secluded in a forested corner of their property.
