Looking outside the window right now doesn't really get me excited about venturing out — not unless I have about 5 layers of clothes on, and even then… brrrr! But if I just close my eyes, imagine the bursts of green and the warmth of the air, the feeling of fresh dirt in my hands and sun on my shoulders… I start getting excited about spring already. Here are some great tutorials and reader-submitted projects from the past year to get your juices flowing. More
It is December 12th and I (shockingly) gardened yesterday (thank you global warming). The New England ground where I live is still not frozen and I was able to finally put the last dozen plants that I bought months ago into the ground (whew). But now that I have pushed the outermost limits of the gardening calendar, it is time to pack it up. But rather than just shoving all the stuff in the shed, I thought I would take some time and care to put things away in a way that won't have me cursing next spring. More
Last week I hosted an event in my barn where the attendees all learned how to make Thanksgiving centerpieces from elements that we found in the woods and in our fading November gardens. In fact, I was told by my new bulb friends that you can plant bulbs in the fall and spring and get a constant parade of flowers popping up late into the fall and kicking off again early in the spring (great for the lazy gardener as well!). When I heard this, I decided to ask for help and test it at my house in The Springs, NY. This post is just the beginning.

I work at a flower shop, I love flowers, I love arranging flowers, but I never take flowers home… because I hate dealing with them! I don't like changing the water, and I especially don't like cleaning gross vases when I inevitably neglect to change the water. But come fall, more and more gorgeous dried plants are available at the flower market, no-maintenance flowers, seeds, and pods with intriguing textures, subtle colors, and an indefinite lifespan.
