My Green Resolution: Tomorrow marks the first day of winter and I could dwell upon the freezing temperatures, grey skies and snow shoveling that await but instead my mind is elsewhere, approximately 5 inches under ground. Tomorrow is of course the winter solstice and from that moment on the days are going to get longer and longer. Soon these longer days will summon bulbs of snowdrops to awaken and push through 5 inches of soil and emerge in happy clusters of white blooms and green foliage around the birdbath and we will be able to sip our morning tea and take in that first sign of spring with a sigh of relief. Whenever I’m out and about in the city, I've always got one eye on the sidewalk and the other scanning the curb for attractive junk that I can recycle into planters for my roof garden. Dresser drawers and discarded terracotta are premium finds, but even old fruit crates are just deep enough to accommodate leafy greens or herbs with shallow root systems. I decided to fill this one up with a crop of wild arugula (Eruca vesicaria sativa). I prefer this type to the cultivated 'Rocket' variety as it has more attractive, softer leaves and a deeper, spicier taste. More
