When your home office is out in the open, you can't just hide the mess behind a closed door at the end of the day. What are you going to do with the pens, notepads, files, etc.? The little-used ironing board closet typical of my Spanish-style apartment seemed ripe for renovation. Other people have fitted them to hold spices, why couldn't I fit mine to hold office supplies?  

With the push for more efficient and eye-pleasing lighting, it's increasingly easier to find task lights utilizing bright and cool-to-the-touch LEDs. After waking up with terrible back pain yet again, thanks to a day spent working from the couch, I was more than inspired to research ergonomic task chairs. With a variety of price points, I discovered task chairs available for nearly any budget. It's often said it's fine to pinch when it comes to everything but your task chair if you plan to work from a desk more than a few minutes daily, not only for productivity, but also your longterm health...

Why would buy when you could DIY? You get the same function, but (usually) for far less cost, and the result is always something uniquely "you." Even the tiniest detail in your home office – like a notebook tossed casually on the desk – can speak volumes about your life and style. After all, they say, "the tools maketh the man". But sometimes the man makes the tools, too.

Setting up a dedicated home office doesn't really require much to get started. All you really need is a good work surface, task chair, and lamp. But creating a productive and decor complementary work area does require a little planning, both in regards to available space and budget.

As hard as I try, I always end up with at least a few folders full of receipts, forms, and miscellaneous items throughout the year, inevitably cluttering my filing cabinet and desk drawer. Since the tax deadline has come and gone, it's an opportune time to empty out the drawers full of "I'll get to that later" papers and decide what to shred, what to scan and store on a flash drive, and which items to retain on file.
