Name:Lesley & Gus Poole
Location: Mercer Island, Washington Size: 3,400 square feet Years lived in: 2.5 years; Owned
Lesley and Gus have one of those homes where you expect to smell freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies upon entering. Just as lovely, I was gifted with a jar of home-pickled dills! Despite its stylish demeanor, the Poole home is a warm and bustling hub for this sweet couple, their three kids, and a hyperactive (yet oh-so-charming) Lab-Poodle mix.
Name: Taylor and Isabella Crockett Location: Central Phoenix, Arizona Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 9 Months; Owned
While the housing market in Phoenix was one of the first to crash, it's also been the first to rebound. Before the first quarter of 2012, if you were quicker than the investors, you could snag a foreclosed home in an historic neighborhood for less than $100,000. Unfortunately, most of the options were limited to either a house in need of considerable repair, or a flipped house with a new, yet hideous interior. When Taylor started looking for a house around this time, she thought she chose one settled squarely in the middle of those two options. Some aesthetic problems needed to be addressed, and perhaps a few structural repairs here and there, but ultimately she figured she'd be able to live in the house while slowly completing projects. In reality, the problems were so extensive that it would take 11 months of work before moving herself and her daughter into the home.
Name: Adam Wallacavage
Location: South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Size: 3000 square feet
Years Lived In: 13; Owned
Stepping inside Adam’s home is akin to stepping inside a set designer’s brain. Everywhere you look, it’s a creative smorgasbord for the eyes. But what makes this place even more spectacular is the fact that Adam's home is composed of his own creations, most of which he crafted with his own two hands. His house is what dreams are made of in that he goes where most of us aspire to go but dare not, bravely displaying whatever he fancies.
Name: Maaike, Erik and Harper Bernstrom Location: Middletown, Rhode Island Size: 2500 square feet Years lived in: 4 years; owned
It’s hard not to fall in love with the bucolic land along Aquidneck Island’s Eastern shore. Stone walls line winding roads covered by canopies of green. It’s the perfect place for a lazy Sunday afternoon joy ride along roads like Paradise Avenue or a hike through the Norman Bird Sanctuary woods to the top of Hanging Rock, which overlooks Sachuest Beach. It’s no surprise that Maaike, a photographer, and Erik, an avid surfer and mountain biker who works in the sailing industry, have always dreamed of building a life together here.
Name:Natalie Steinebrunner and Krešimir Tokić
Location: Belvedere Square; Baltimore, Maryland Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; Owned
Natalie and Krešimir live on a quiet, leafy street in Baltimore with their dogs, Ziggy and Eva (affectionately: "monster mixes"). Tall trees shade the house, and open windows let in a bright, crisp breeze on the first official day of fall.
Name: Grainne, Ian, Tait, and Otto Location: Edinburgh; Scotland Size: 4 Bedroom Edwardian Terrace Years lived in: 8 years; Owned
The moment Grainne and Ian clapped eyes on this 1910 Edwardian terraced house, they knew it was the family home they had been waiting for. Though they have since made a few big changes to the interior — like knocking two rooms into one to make that glorious kitchen diner that opens up onto the garden — the house in its original state was already full of magnificent period features: fireplaces, stripped wooden floors, doors and tiles. The high ceilings and generous proportions of the period, combined with that sense of history, create an ideal space for their two growing boys, Tait and Otto, to run wild, and the perfect canvas for Grainne and Ian's extensive and colourful collections.
Name: Monique Lavie, her boyfriend Matt Woodward, and Elsa the Boxer Location: Travis Heights; Austin, Texas Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: Owned; 6 months
It's completely enviable when someone can successfully pull off a super simple, clean, minimal look without their place looking empty. There aren't a lot of actual items in Monique Lavie's house, but it's the way she's invested in rich, detailed furniture pieces, incorporated intentional pops of strong color, and carefully arranged it all that's created a home full of style.
Five years ago, Lalita moved into her husband's townhouse while they were still dating. Before she got her hands on it, she says it was a bachelor pad, with occasional traces of the ghosts of girlfriends past. As founder of Loop Architectural Materials and a lifelong design lover, Lalita recognized the possibilities in the unique and open layout of the home.
Texas born and bred, Lauren and Stiles Christner embody the small town warmth and southern spunk so often found in the Lone Star state. Lucky for us, the same can be said about their beautiful starter home in Denver, Colorado. Stepping through the threshold of this home, one might initially find it hard to determine the age of its residents. Vintage inspired decor sits amongst beautiful heirloom pieces (passed down for generations) and will have you guessing whether the decorator is an urbanized Texas hipster or an established southern homesteader.
Name: Catt Sadler, Host of E! News Weekend — TV host, producer, actress and Instagram addict (@iamcattsadler) Location: Hancock Park; Los Angeles, California Size: 3,000 square feet Years lived in: 1 1/2 years
The windows are my favorite highlight from Catt's home. Her house takes in that great Southern California light, with large windows in every room that look out to greenery that reminds you of the East Coast. She's even chosen to go without window treatments on a handful of the windows, which allows the unique architecture of the home to be a part of the interior aesthetic.
